Doug, we also live in Illinois, can you let me know of your experience with Driver’s Ed in a Box? It is a very expensive resource, our daughters are nearly 18 and will learn to drive in the next year.. do you think it is a vital resource and can you tell me what is in the “Box” so to speak, what does it offer us, to help our teen drivers. I am curious to hear from someone who has used it. I will not put a price on our daughter’s safety, so will purchase if it seems to be a very important tool, however I know noone who has used it, and would like to know more from one who has. Thanks a lot. I did put this question on the Driver’s Ed post, but thought you might miss my question.
The package comes with a book for the parent, a book for the student, a test answer book, audio CDs for the parent to learn how to teach driving, and videos for the student and parent together. It also comes with a student driver sign, and mirrors you stick on your windows to give the parent a rear-view and view of the student’s eyes.
When our oldest child did the state-approved class, he took the written test to get his permit, then they had classroom instruction and videos, of which about 70% was on drinking and drug use. They immediately started on-the-road driving sessions and told us to get him in the car and practice.
In contrast, Driver Ed in a Box had us start with learning about the car controls and the areas around the car you can’t see. Driving starts in a parking lot and you move to more advanced skills only when full mastery is obtained with each skill.
See my answer over in the other thread for some additional comments.
Thanks Doug, your two posts are what we needed and my husband thinks that as the program is so thorough we will most likely use it. I do appreciate you taking the time to answer my questions. The point about saving some insurance money is an excellent one, so if your teen will wait, there is one real reason to make it so. I am glad our daughters waited, they are far more mature now and better equipped to see the risks and be careful. Thanks again. Linda
