I know its a very strange question. But my daughter hates math. However this fall we discovered if we let her go outside to work on her math she doesn’t dawdle, she gets her work done and does it well with time to spare. She says she thinks math is ok now. She prefers to climb our big tree then work on it up there. I think it’s wonderful that she is doing math without complaining and getting done in the time aloud. But my mom heard about this and is mortified. She says if dd was in public school she would be focused to sit in a chair and learn like normal people. She said that I’m not setting real world expecatations on her and someday when she gets a job or is in college she will want to climb trees then. All my kids thrive outside; which is one of the reasons we choose a CM education, we are an outdoor loving family.
So my questions are: Is doing math work in in a tree cm friendly? Or is it forming a bad habit that will effect her in her future?
You don’t say yow old your daughter is. If your daughter is 17, can only work in a tree, and wants to be an accountant, I’d say you have a potential problem. In any other case, LET HER DO HER MATH OUTSIDE. I DO hope you live in a warm climate <vbg> as this could cause potential problems in deep winter. Perhaps you want to start having her think of things she could do in the wintertime to help her? Anyway, ask your mom just WHO decided that it was “normal” to force children to sit at desks for hours a day–tell her this is actually a VERY RECENT development in human history and you think it’s unnatural. Then let your daughter learn where she can focus. At some time, later, she’ll probably expand her horizons. But in the meantime, she’s working, learning, and happy. What could POSSIBLY be wrong with that?????
I had to smile while reading this. How great is it that we can let our children learn in an enviornment that THEY enjoy… I can remember sitting in class (well over 20 yrs ago) and wondering why we couldn’t go outside on a nice day and have class! And, had my mother said that, I probably would have told here there are jobs that don’t require sitting at a desk all day…park ranger, enviornmental specialist. Heck, even mail men/women are outdoors most of their day! I agree with Bookworm…she’s happy, working, and LEARNING…go for it!
My kids do math in all areas – car – bed – couch – floor – back yard – you name it we’ve done it – in a tent! All that matter’s to me is that they are doing it and understanding it. LOVE home schooling for that reason alone!
Thanks ladies! My mom was a high school math teacher so math really concerns her. I’m just happy dd is not writing “I hate math” on all her math work right now lol.
As for climate, we live in Mn so it will be getting cold very soon. If I know dd she will be asking to do her math in her snow quinzhee this winter lol
She is 8 years old in 3rd grade and the habbit we are working on her for the last 2 years is not hoarding. So not worrying about doing math work in a tree makes me very happy 🙂
Math in a tree is fabulous! I’m sorry your Mom freaked on you. Just keep helping her learn and grow and I’m sure if she wants to she will be able to do math at a table one day. 😉
Is that like my DD who narrates history while turning cartwheels across the room? She probably won’t be able to do that in most professions, either, but at age 7, there are lots of things she’ll have to grow out of before she joins the adult world.
Now I want an orchard! Or at least a tree we can climb!
We live in an outdoor paradise. Before we had kids we lived in the city and hated it and I knew we needed to move out to the country. We have a river on our property and 100’s of fruit, and nut trees. I wanted to raise our kids the way I wish I could have been raised which is why we home school with CM theory of education. It fits perfectly for our outdoor life style. But I don’t want to ignore the habit part of cm which is why I asked the question 🙂
I saw this at the top of the forum again and realized I needed to clarify LOL! I was answering “Yes!” to your question “Is doing math work in in a tree cm friendly?”
As to the post title, does it matter if she does her math in a tree? NO!!! I love it and if she does, why not? I am sure many brick and mortar students and many brick and mortar teachers wish they could do lessons in a tree!
