We slogged our way through in when we did AO year 1, but my daughter HATED every minute of it, even after I bought the audiobook version. Now, personally, I found it interesting when I read it to myself, but I did not enjoy reading it aloud (and we read tons of books of the same or greater difficulty.)
I also didn’t want to study British history for so long since we’re American. When I switched to the curriculum guide at HIFI (Lindafay’s blog), she started with American History along side of world history using another H.E. Marshall book, This Country of Ours. We liked this better, but we found this book to be the same as OIS and did not like it. We began using Mara Pratt’s American History Stories, and that works much better for our family. When we found SCM, I fell in love with the simplicity and decided that I don’t want to cover both world and American in depth at the same time. We now use SCM as our framework and simply enjoy listening to American History Stories on audio just for fun.
Now, with that said, we have some dear friends whose children loved these books. Go figure. To each his own, but you can read samples online and maybe that will help.
I remember you saying that at the conference, Christie. Our boys loved “Our Island Story” and I certainly learned more about the history of England than I had ever known. We use SCM for history/geography/Bible though as we want our children to see God’s economy throughout history and it works so well for children of different grade levels.
We use AO and started with OIS and TCOO this year—didn’t click well. That’s why we switched to SCM history, and to keep the kids on the same history cycle. We plan to add in the Truthquest guides next year and use that as our spine, along with the SCM age appropriate books for each child. I’m really looking forward to not having a regular formal spine—we just havent’ found one that all of of like, can understand well. We do have books on the shelf we can just refer to for some specific topics, if needed—but overall it will just be enjoying living books with the TQ commentaries. Looking forward to that! Blessings, Gina
