We are switching to CM methods for our next school year. I have kept math planning last as I’m unsure of what I want to do. This year my son is using Math In Focus Grade 1. My daughter is using Abeka K5 and Horizons K together. The general premise behind MIF is to learn a concept inside and out before moving on to another. We like it very much, except that it is very expensive (approx $150/semester for the first child, less for the second as we already have the texts). We also have not been as diligent as we should and are still working through the 1st semester…but that’s my fault. Anyway, it’s not a CM-style curriculum but both my dh and I like how it’s designed for the child to really understand math and how to apply it to daily life. I was wondering if anyone here uses or used it. If so, do you find it fits well into your day. The teachers guide assumes a 45 minute math-class per day. We rarely give it that much time now as Abeka takes up so much time as it is. I’m thinking that once we incorporate CM methods into our day for everything else that we’ll have more time to use MIF as intended. Without burning the kids out. Thank you.
