I found this neat idea and have been implementing it. You buy Magazine Holders, Label them with a Topic, and place the books in each one. I wanted canvas and due to the cost have been buying them slowly. Some Topic examples would be : The West, Ancient Egypt, and Nature. I put the books under these topics in each magazine holder. Then I have different subjects on different shelves, history takes up more than one. Science and Nature Share a row. Math only takes one folder so I put it on the row with science and nature. I divided Science into Animals, Human Anatomy, Astronomy, Plants and Physics.
I’m using Delicious Library for the Mac. You can scan in books by the barcode and it catalogs everything for you. You can add them to “shelves” within the program and do all sorts of searches. I think you can download it to your iPod or iPhone so when you’re shopping you can see if you already own the book.
For the physical shelves I have them separated by subject – ancient history, middle ages, American history, science, poetry, etc. I’m working on putting colored stickers on the spine of each book. Science is blue, chapter books are light green, American history is red/white/blue stripes, etc. Hopefully when I’m done the kids will be able to easily see where things go.
I also use Delicious Library for Mac. I use the barcode scanning and I love the whole thing! My shelves are even like crazy4boys – by subject w/ assigned color.
Oh boy! I just got Delicious Library for my Mac – I also found a used Flic Bluetooth scanner and am having trouble getting it to sync with my iMac. Would either of you that have it know anything about that and have any advice? I can send it back, but it was WAY cheaper than the newer version of scanners. I tried to add it manually but when it asks for the device’s address, I don’t know what to do. Anyways, all that to say – I really like that program too!
This is a great question and even better answers!! EXCEPT for the fact that I do not have a MAC or an IPHONE…but now I am even more jealous of MAC users.
I love the idea of the Magazine holders…What a great idea. Thanks for sharing.
I must admit that I am enjoying Delicious Library too.
However, before I got that app, I catalogued my books using a simple database program. I wonder if you could do the same thing on a spreadsheet. I just created fields for title, author, owner (mom, child #1, child #2, etc.), hardback or paperback (because sometimes we had multiple copies of one title), and notes. You could easily make a field for “tags,” I suppose, and put key words in there to help you search and find it later.
I use Delicious Library, too. You can sync it to your iPhone, which has come in quite handy for our family when we go to used book sales. We can check if we have a book at home and whether it is paperback or hardback. With so many books it is sometimes hard to remember exactly what we have at home.
I think there is one on http://www.collectorz.com/book that is for a PC – I haven’t looked into it much, but I came across it when I was looking for this type of software. It looks similar.
I Use collectorz.com products for my music catalog and for my books on my PC, I also use the book version on my ipod to help when I am shopping, so I know what books I have and don’t duplicate. It is a very good program for music and books, as long as you have a scanner which I got quite cheaply about a year ago.
I use LibraryThing also. One of the things I like about it is it’s networking feature. I enjoy finding other readers with similar books and interests and seeing what’s in their libraries. I often find book suggestions this way.
