The Outline Map Book is very useful; it is just what it sounds like–a collection of outline maps your kids can label, color, etc. All sorts of places, and historical times as well. Very handy to have, although with hunting you can find maps online as well.
Material World is completely different. It is a couple who went around the world, finding “typical” families in various countries. Then, the families put ALL their belongings around their home; there is text discussing what they have, and why. It is absolutely stunning to see the differences between, say, an American family and one in Nepal. Or various countries of Africa. The same pair have also done a fascinating book along the same lines with the food a family eats in a week. HIGHLY recommended. We located each family on the map, prayed for needs in that country–it was a wonderful study.
I basically leave Material World laying on the end table in the living room for the kids to pick up and look at whenever. It’s a fascinating enough book that it draws consistent perusing.
Michelle, what’s the name of the food book? I haven’t heard of that one.
It’s called Hungry Planet: What the World Eats and it is if anything even MORE fascinating than Material World. And, although I don’t think they planned it that way, it is a good depiction of how the family works and how necessary the institution of the family is to us. Highly recommended.
I hope, in my spare time in the next couple weeks, to have a notebook page made up that could work with Material World or Hungry Planet; if I get it done I’ll share it.
