I’m almost positive that I read that we are to pick only one literature module and read it to everyone, but which one? My boys are 5 and 10, the i’m considering modules 1-5. If we’ve read some of the books in one of the modules would you recommend I replace them with books from the other modules or just read them again? Thanks
Hey, Des, I started CM late, so I just started at the top of Module 1 and started reading. We’re catching up and none of us have minded the stories at all. =)
Do what works for you! With mostly elementary ages I would choose just one set of books to read, or even a few books from across the levels. If you would have had a high schooler I would have them read their own literature year on their own, and you read to the younger ones from a module more their age range.
My 11yo listens to family read alouds most of the time (occasionally I will do one specifically aimed at my littlest ones she has listened to before and probably read before so she’ll skip). But she also reads her own literature list.
And a hint – use summer for having them read some of their literature books! This summer my 11yo will read a few from her lit list including Animal Farm by Orwell. She turns 12 next month.
That is a great idea! Her Aunty just bought her the Wizard of Oz! If we are in at the bookstore and pick up a book after that one it will just seem like summer reading (wink). I have built up a used book credit there and we use that to pick up our classics and lit as much as we can. Took in a heap of twaddle to sell for credit, insert awkward mama dance lol, and now we collect our books from it.
Thank you! I had planned to have him do some of his lit readings as part of our summer reading program, so I’ll keep that plan. I think we’ll do family read allude for next year, with an eye to transiti. Sherazoning him to independent reading the year after. Sheraz, I think we’ll start with the first module too.
We jump around the different modules. I try to read aloud an easier book then follow it with one a bit more challenging so there is a variety. My 8 and 10yos also have a chapter of another book to read on their own, but I haven’t used any from the liturature modules for these. I’ll probably start having them read some of those on their own as they get a bit older, but for now I like to save them for our family read alouds. I’m hoping to continue reading aloud (even to the older ones) as long as I possibly can! It’s such a great part of our day.
