I love the SCM Guide “Joshua-Malachi and Ancient Greece”!  The kids enjoy it, too.  However, when we recently went through their exam narrations, they looked at me with a blank look, “I don’t remember that far back.”  (even for the recently read Scripture)   I found myself providing a little push to get them going.  Any thoughts?

Yikes! I forgot about doing Term 1 exam questions. We have one week left before we start Term 2. We use Math U See so figured we’d do the exam once we reach that point…I have a 1st grader and we are doing Gen-Deutronomy…

What subjects did you ask questions for besides scriptures?

Don’t know if this is of any help, but at the end of each Term we have the kids draw a picture or scene of what they remember.  I will let them look back at the bible etc to help them remember?  I hope to get more answers cause tat would be of help to me also. Misty

This past summer I came across an idea of “word splash”es which I altered a bit to work for our reviews and/or retention testing.  We simply brainstorm on a large sheet of paper or dry-erase board all the words they associate with the topic/person/era.  Using the words, the student composes a written narration.  For the younger ones, I type what they narrate.  Sometimes, they choose to include an illustration.  It’s working quite nicely, and shows how much they do actually remember (they tend to block their minds with the thoughts of “I don’t remember”).

    Happy learning!  🙂

Please don’t be discouraged. The exams are a learning tool for you as well as for the students. Perhaps little refreshers of materials thoughout the term would be helpful. For example, occassionally compare and contrast stories and books you are reading throughout the term. I don’t think this has to be anything formal or time-consuming, just comments now and then to keep the stories active in their minds.

I also like the idea of using artwork for the exams or as narrations throughout the term. Working with your hands does help “cement” an idea in the mind.

The habit of recalling a story for the exam might take awhile for the student to develop. Next term, they might do better. Recalling a story on demand isn’t easy…I know I’ve fumbled over many questions that I knew I knew, but couldn’t quite spit out. Test taking in any form is a skill to be developed.

Hang in there! You know they know their stuff…just have to figure out how articulate it over the long term.
