I am looking for some different books other than some listed on the SCM guide. I want to use: Charlotte’s Web, Mr. Poppers Penguins; Stuart Little; Complete Tales of Winnie the Pooh. I need 2-4 other suggestions. (we read Stuart Little and Winnie the Pooh this past year unknowingly, but maybe he’ll get a lot more out of it in another year or so).  He just turned 5 and is devouring our read alouds and I’m having a hard time keeping good selections on hold at the library already!  So I would like to have 2 extra books in mind for his 1st grade year in case we run out or to read over that summer.  I know I know it is a ways away but I love planning it all out even if I later just use it for ideas.

Have you read the Little House books yet? Ds6 (just barely 6) liked Little House in the Big Woods, and I have a feeling he’ll like Farmer Boy.

My 7 yo son (1st grade) LOVES Trumpet of the Swan.  I read it to he and his sister and then he insisted on having it as his reader right afterwards!   He also loves Paddle to the Sea, an Ambleside geography book.  :)Gina

My kids also loved the Holling C. Holling books, especially Paddle to the Sea and Tree in the Trail.  They also enjoyed Pinochio at that age.

My 7 yo ds loves the Billy and Blaze books.  They were mentioned by someone on another thread and I checked them out at the library (had to do 3 interlibrary loans), but otherwise they had the other 5.  They aren’t super long, but there are 8 or 9 still in circulation so it could take awhile to read them all.  My son liked them so much he wants the set for his birthday in July.  I started looking for them on the internet, books stores, etc.  We found one (paperback, but he didn’t care) for .25 cents.

We are finishing mod 1 and read all the great selections but a little ahead of schedule b/c one chapter a day was just not enough.  We are also doing 106 Days and started  The Story of Helen Keller by Lorena Hickok.   It is listed there as optional reading, but I had my copy from childhood and wanted to read it to them so that is the book we are on now as a literature selection.  They are loving it and they are gaining new understanding on how I feel about having a child with special needs and the amazing skills she was able to aquire with so many limitations.  I realize it is about a girl, but it is not girly at all and I think it is great for kids to hear a story celebrating a person with physical disabilties.

I also found out my son can read like a ton of the Dan Frontier books.  We get them through interlibrary loan but he loves these and he’s 6.  I second Trumpet and the Swan, also Rascal was a good one with my boys.

Thank you ladies so much!  Yes we have been devouring my Little House series I grew up with already (began with Farmer boy over hot chocolate thru the winter, and now are doing Little House in the Big Woods, even my 3 yr old listens in).  Also discovered the Billy and Blaze books at the library and want to find some to keep hopefully.  My oldest ds currently just turned 5, Loves these books (we’ve read 3 so far and I am thinking to collect and use as early readers?)

So inspired and so grateful for this site and planning ahead to hopefully be able to find and pray in what we truly need and even some wants in books.
