Did I start too early?

I quit my 17 year career earlier last year (2014) to stay home and raise my children with the plan to homeschool. My daughter has a late birthday and is not technically kindergarten age until next year (2015 – 2016). I was so excited to get started homeschooling, I purchased a packaged kindergarten curriculum and have been using it this year (2014 – 2015). My daughter is doing great with the material (except handwriting). I have fallen in love with the Charlotte Mason method, and as I begin to think about next year I wonder how I should plan. Since my daughter has done so well with the kindergarten material, should I just plan to push forward at Grade 1 level next year, or should I slow it down and plan to review a lot of what we have done this year adding in lots of rich living books?

This is just my personal opinion… If it were me, I would pull back a bit, get out doors as much as possible Maybe do the Outdoor Secrets w/ the companion book.., I have heard wonderful things about it and plan to add it to our own rotation soon. And lot’s of reading…

    Winnie the Pooh
    Beatrix Potter
    Lovely Fairytales
Poetry (Child’s Garden of Verses, Favorite Poems Old & New for Boys & Girls)

Habit/Character training is always ongoing of course.

Lots and lots of playing and art type activities. Just enjoy these fleeting moments with her.

If I could turn back time and do it over, that’s what I would have done. I made “school” too structured too soon before discovering CM. At least I have learned and with my 2 year old, I’m just letting him be a 2 year old and letting him learn through play. 🙂

Charlotte encouraged that these early years be a quiet growing time.  I would drop the curriculum and allow her to fall in love with the outdoors and books.  Read SCM’s The Early Years book as well as Caught Up in a Story by Sarah Clarkson.  And don’t blink…this precious time will be gone before you know it.
