As I am looking into bringing by 3rd child into the dictation rotatin, I feel a bit overwhelmed. I will have 7th, 5th, 4th doing dictations come Sept. Last year, it took 15-20 min for the 2 big kids to do the dictation and chat a bit about some of the written elements from the passage or any missed punctuation. Now, brirng up the 3rd child for it, if I’m doing the math right, that’s gonna be one hour, 2x a week.

<They do prep one day, dictaion the next>, so last year, one child prepped M, dictation Tuesday. While the other kid, preped Tuesday, and dictated Wed. That way I was only doing one dictation a day, for 4 days.

Just wondering how you all do dictations with multiple children. I could do 2 easily, throwing in a 3rd seems tricky.

3 little ones will be keeping busy (?) while I add this extra time to the mix.

With those ages, my 4th and 5th grader would be doing the same dictation and I’d do all of them at the same time. I’d sit them down around our dining room table (so they can’t see each other’s papers) and I’d say: Suzy and Jane, write: A fool vents all his feelings. . . Mike, you write: It is prudence to overlook. . .

When they were each ready, I’d read the next part for each of them. I haven’t had trouble with my kids being able to focus on their own dictation sentence since it’s the one they know. They don’t get distracted by what I’m telling the other child. That’s my experience.
