I learned to read with the Dick and Jane readers, but that was a loooong time ago, so I thought it was kind of quaint when I started to see them pop up on library bookshelves. Anyway, I just gave them a try with my 5 yo dd who was reading, but somewhat reluctantly. She loves them! She sat and read the first 80 pages straight through and her reading fluency has grown in leaps and bounds! It just reiterates: “There is nothing new under the sun.”

We found the same thing to be true here. We had a copy of a Dick and Jane treasury we were given as a novelty when DD was a baby, and it had never occurred to me to actually use it in reading instruction! We had started reading with a strict phonics approach and we were getting really bored with endless wordlists and still not able to really get into any stories other than the level 1 Bob books. I started to teach her sight words as we read through the Dick and Jane books and found that her reading fluency and INTEREST in reading grew in leaps and bounds as well. When we finished these, we transitioned nicely into the Pathway First Steps Reader.

Both my kids read pretty well now… I needed to do some review phonics for my 7yo son, as he had trouble figuring out new words – but I think he is reading above grade level (although I don’t know how to test that…)
(I’m using Progressive Phonics for phonics review)

We have had the same experience. Both my kids read Dick and Jane immediately after finishing Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons. It was just what they needed to build their confidence. They saw that they could easily go from a “reading lesson book” to reading full books, and I think it helped a lot when they began reading more difficult books. I agree…”there is nothing new under the sun”.

Yes Dick and Jane and Bob books helped my girls gain confidence in reading like Lindsey said, after finishing 100 EZ Lessons! We also love the Pathway Readers and my 6 yr old dd is reading Days Go by!
