I love my cloth diapers I have to state right off the bat!

I have a couple questions though.  I can’t find how to strip them to make sure they are absorbing as much as possible.  Can someone help me?

Also, I have a heavy wetter, during the day and night.  I have been using the Bum Genius AIO and love them and pre-folds w/ thirstie covers.  He’s the thing the covers are getting to small for her and the Bums, well she doesn’t have the leg gerth for them yet.  What are your suggestions to get through a month or so?  I’d really not like to use disposables being we have both of these.

    Thanks moms!

    Hi there,

I love my cloth diapers too. 🙂  For heavier wetting I have been using hemp liners.  http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001NAAQRI/sr=1-5/qid=1305856143/ref=pop?ie=UTF8&s=baby-products&qid=1305856143&sr=1-5  (sorry about the lengthy looking link!)  I love the premium ones because they dry really fast and you can split them into two liners.  I have converted over to hemp liners combined with the microfiber insert for my pocket Fuzzy Bunz diapers instead of the prefolds I used sometimes.  Hemp stopped our leaking problems, but they are a bit pricey and if you are not looking to spend any money til you change to different diaper then this isn’t helpful, but if you need a more absorbent liner eventually, these are great. Plus they are thin and could make your covers fit a little longer and then you could use them to help absorb in your AIO. HTH! 🙂

I don’t mean to be a sower of paranoia but can I ask if the heavy wetting is a new thing? The reason I ask is that my daughter was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at age 19 months and the main symptom is drinking and peeing a lot. Another one is weight loss. If you have any concerns that this is something new or that the drinking or peeing is way beyond what is normal, please get it checked out.

No it’s not a new thing but I appreciate the advice nebby.  She’s always been a heavy wetter, but now that we’re between sized it’s become an issue.  I will keep your daughter in my prayers.

Hey!  as far as stripping, you wash them regularly – cold rinse, hot wash, extra rinse or three.  then start the process all over, using NO detergent and the hottest water you can get into your machine – you can even throw in a pot of boiling water (into machine!), even turn up your hot water heater if you can (just remember to turn it back so as not to scald any kids!!!).  You can try using a bit (no more than 1/2 cup of vinegar and if you have really hard water, try using a bit of Charlie’s Soap laundry booster or a half a capful of calgon water softener laundry additive.  these will help the minerals settle out so the water can do its job better.  keep lifting lid or looking thru the window the see if there are any suds at all.  keep rinsing until there are no signs at all of suds.  if you use bums or FB’s, it becomes really tough after a while, IMO, because the fleece liners get stinky and slightly repelent – even with proper use and wash.  if this seems to be a problem, try going into the sporting/hunting section at a walmart or sporting goods store and look for something called SPORT WASH.  it’s a completely odorless enzyme soap, meant for hunters to wash their clothes in so the prey doesn’t catch their scent.  it does a great job on those pocket style diapers.  just rinse, rinse, rinse!  I can’t remember which diaper site I read about sport wash on, but it made a big difference in my pocket dipes.

another thought for the prefold and thirsties.  try using something small, that will still fit in the dipe/cover.  i purchased, for like 5$, a pack of plain microfiber cleaning cloths.  washed them really well in hot water and approved detergent.  then, i’d fold them in 3rd’s and slip in into the prefold, which was also folded in thirds, so the prefold enclosed teh microfiber cloth. lay into cover, put on, wham – super extgra absorbant! you can use doublers.  or even a baby washcloth or two.  of if your baby is getting bigger, use an infant size prefold as a doubler inside a regular or toddler size prefold.
