So my sweet boy has had a diaper rash for while now. We use cloth and cloth wipes with water only. I know it is not that. I was thinking it could be a yeast rash but it is not spreading just not going away.
I did change their diaper detergent, but changed it back since they both got a rash from it. That did help some, but is not going away all the way. I have been keeping him as dry as possible and putting cornstarch on his bottom.
I now think it must be something he is eating, but I cannot think of anything new we are eating.
I have never had a rash hang around this long. What homemade things could I try?

Maalox and Aquaphor mixed together into a “diaper rash cream”. Seriously, my pediatrician proscribed it and worked wonders.
The other possiblity would be to do diaperless bottom for a few days to let everything air and hopefully resolve itself.

We have had good success with a thin layer of olive oil on stubborn diaper rashes.

I have been making a lotion bar that is very soothing and healing on rashes like excema. It uses beeswax and natural oils and so is good at keeping in moisture and acts as a barrier type cream. If you are interested in something like that I could give you the instructions. It is pretty simple and safe to use on even open sore rashes. Hope your little one feels better soon.

I agree with the natural oils idea. My littlest has had similar trouble and I have very good success with coconut oil per my ped’s recommendation. I didn’t think it would work but gave it a try, and I have been using it ever since whenever she gets a rash. Worked wonders for her. Maybe any pure, natural oil would be helpful? HTH 🙂

I was thinking if coconut oil or something might work. I will try that for bed, I have coconut oil and olive oil in the house. I will have to put sposies on him for the night, but whatever works!
Don’t antacids like Maalox have metals in them?
Lindabean I would love those instructions!
Off to give him a bath and hopefully tomorrow he will look better!

Coconut oil and olive oil are very good for this, and airing the area when you can is also something we did with our and that helped a lot.

Hands down, Dr. Smith’s diaper cream is the best! When I lived in St Louis many years ago, my pediatrician recommended this brand and said, “lather it on until the skin is completely covered.” He was right, it made the rash disappear within hours of application, no kidding!

If it’s yeast, let him eat lots and lots of yogurt or get him some L.acidophilis in pill form and make him eat the powder inside the pill. That always got rid of my kids yeast rashes.

I just wanted to chime in here: I’m a crunchy mommy too, so the first think I always put on a sore baby bottom is breast milk. Then I try things like good herbs and oils as mentioned above. However, if this won’t go away, you may want to have it looked at by your Dr. My oldest had a rash that I just couldn’t beat, and it ended up being Impetigo. It was the first (maybe only!) antibiotic she’s ever had. Now I know that it can be treated with Slippery Elm and maybe Colloidal Silver Salve if it’s confined to the site though-wish I’d known then! Anyway, just an FYI. Hope you’re little one’s feeling better soon. Those rashes are a true pain in the rear! (Sorry, couldn’t resist)

Just wanted to add that if it is yeast, you are only feeding it by using cornstarch on the rash. Yeast won’t necessarily spread, but does just hang on forever. If you’ve tried all the above solutions and it isn’t going away, try putting generic Lotrimin on it a couple times a day and if it starts going away, that’s what it was. If it is yeast, you will need to either bleach your diapers, or use grapefruit seed extract to kill the yeast. I finally gave up cloth because we couldn’t keep the yeast rashes away, even with changing every 1.5-2 hours.
Also, naked time is the best cure for non-yeast rashes (doesn’t work well for yeast) , we end up doing it a lot to clear the rashes faster. You can also give them a bath with baking soda in the water if it’s non-yeast, very soothing for them.

Thanks so much ladies he looks all better now! The olive oil overnight and good to go. He got so tickled about the olive oil he asked for it again and so did his twin sister. Ha ha silly monkeys!
