That was our situation, as well. My son had not passed but one math test from second grade until the time I pulled him out in 6th grade. Because his standardized test scores were great, though, they just kept bumping him along. His standarized test scores had been weighted heavily. His school actually had instituted a “no lower than 65” grade policy. If a child made a 10, the grade recorded would be 65! I spoke with his principal at one meeting and she was saying how my son was “almost” passing with a 69. I pulled out his tests, some of which had grades in the 30’s and asked if we could average his real grade. I could never get an answer about how this policy served the children. Really, the second I started talking about holding him back, miraculously his grades dramatically improved and I stopped getting papers home. I got so disgusted with the dishonesty that I really could not imagine sending my son to school even another hour, so I didn’t. =) I agree it is so sad the struggles that could have been addressed had not difficulties been ignored.
