If following more of a Charlotte Mason approach for grammar, when should sentences diagramming start? And is there anything other than Junior Analytical Grammar that anyone would recommend for diagramming?
My son, who is in 4th grade, knows the parts of speech and most of the basic grammar rules as far as punctuation and what have you; however, he isn’t very strong in any of those areas.
I don’t think my oldest began diagramming until he was in 7th grade. We used JAG and it was fine. My 9th grade student has not diagrammed one sentence, but I will have him diagram at some point. We’re using Using Language Well by SCM and I’m just not sure where it falls in their lessons.
I’ve never used it but I know someone has mentioned Deconstructing Penguins for diagramming.
Intense grammar instruction starting in grade 4, including diagramming, memory work, and parsing sentences. We repeat the same material for three years, diving deeper as the child understands more and more.
Diagramming is easy and fun. Kids love it. Only adults hate it. If you never act like its hard, they won’t either. ?
Analytical Granmar is the closest curricula to what we use, but not as good (in my opinion.) We use Essentials of the English Language through Classical Coversations. Clasdical and CM line up exactly on grammar instruction- short, intense, starting around age 10.
missceegee is one homeschool mom most of us on this forum look to for guidance and recommendation! 🙂 She is one of my favorite responders (although there are many others out there I look up to too)!
She has taught and used AG for many years and recently switched her recommendation from AG to Grammar Revolution, Get Smart Grammar. 🙂
I love Deconstructing Penguins but it’s literary analysis (protagonists, plot and all that) not grammar. I don’t think you ever have to diagram sentences. Some people find it helpful but it’s not a must. I certainly would not do it before 7th grade and preferably a bit later. Not quite the same issue but I was just reading CM said not to teach composition till form 5 or 6 which translates to tenth grade or later.
