If your state only requires 2 credits of lab science for high school (out of 3 total credits), and you know that you plan to do biology and chemistry for those, then feasibly you have some flexibility for a 9th grade physical science course right?

Since the J. H. Tiner books are listed on Master Books as being for 7th-9th grade, what about combining the Chemistry, Physics and Astronomy books, along with some other resources, for a year of “physical science”? I know that most consider them middle school level (and for some of his books, I agree), but looking through the Physics book, it goes pretty deep for middle school.

I have many of the books, and really like them.  We’ve used Exploring Planet Earth and Exploring the World of Medicine, but I’m not sure we’ll get to the rest in middle school.

Am I totally off base?  I’m planning ahead, and so far I don’t like any high school physical science that I’ve seen.  I do plan to go the more traditional route for biology and chemistry, if that makes a difference.

That sounds like a reasonable reading plan to me. You would have to develop a plan for documenting their learning process. I’m not sure if written narrations would suffice for high school level science? Maybe you could add in some experiments and lab reports? Keeping a science notebook is a wonderful addition to any science program as well.

My daughter will be doing Apologia Physical Science next year for 9th grade and my son did Apologia Biology in 9th grade so I don’t have much experience with designing high school level science courses to offer you. Hopefully someone else will chime in.

Have you seen education exploration  .com?  Click on the advanced tab. My son is going to use this for physical science in the future.

Memoria Press has companion texts to expand the Tiner books. From here: http://www.memoriapress.com/curriculum/science/j-h-tiner-science-series

“Memoria Press has added additional supplemental review questions to each chapter, unit reviews, unit tests, and a final exam for each book in the series. “

An alternative is to have them write narrations for each chapter, and answer the questions after each chapter, too.
