Could some of you who are using  SCM for high school describe what a week looks like, primarily for history?   How much reading, how many narrations, what kind of narrations, what you use alongside of it for language arts, etc.? I’d love to hear specifics.,

You can see samples for all the SCM history guides in the book shop.  The samples give you a complete book list and the first few assignments, as well as a term overview that shows what all grades will be doing and when.

Thank you.  Yes, I’ve looked through all the samples, and we are currently using a history guide ourselves, but I was actually wanting some personal experience stories from those who have used it for highschool.

I am not asking for much in the way of narrations,  sometimes none (gasp, so we use other programs for composition.  We have used Wordsmith Craftsman,  The Exciting World of Creative Writing,  and The Power in Your Hands.   For literature we have used several and are going to try Christian Light’s literature curriculum soon.

We start with Deconstructing Penguins.  Each teen has a list of books for assigned reading throughout high school.

For grammar we have used Rod & Staff once a week doing only the grammar.  Next year we are going to try Our Mother Tongue.

Secrets of the Great Communicators is our speech curriculum.

Life of Fred Language Arts books are used either in Junior high or later varying with each teen.

Some of my teens like Queen’s Language Lessons for the High school student,  etc. and use those, skipping the grammar because it is too easy.

For history, my oldest read (a lot) and narrated, oral and written, added to his Book of Centuries (which I feel is vital), located places on maps/globe/internet, discussions took place and I think that may have been it.

Composition curriculum has never worked well with us so my son is reading On Writing Well and using Elements of Style worksheet pages for review. He’s also reading How to Read a Book. I don’t know if he will finish the books but they have been very helpful to him.

Honestly, that is exactly what I was hoping to do: Elements of Style, How to Read a Book, living history books, narrations, BOC, literature, a little bit of grammar, and an occasional lit. guide. I just need the confidence.

Although I have purchased several lit guides, we have never really used much out of them. I know Lightning Literature has been popular with a lot of families but it just wasn’t for us. I have several Brave Writer guides and a few others, I’m sure, that we didn’t get much use out of.
Not that they can’t be helpful, but for some reason I just can’t get them to become a part of the daily schedule.
*Maybe* this coming semester we can try one, or not:)

TWTM also has lists of general questions to discuss before writing a lit. essay.  I’m considering just incorporating that method with a few books each year.
