I had a question about which level to start my son in for Delightful Reading. My son is 5 and knows all 26 letters and their sounds. He only knows the short vowel sounds. He is just learning that the vowels can also say other sounds. He also doesn’t know things like the “s” can say “z”. So my question is — should we use level 2 or 1? Im wondering if level 1 would be too repetitive of what he already knows?

My youngest is 5.5, and knew his basic letter sounds. We staryed with level 2 and it is going great! We don’t do it every day, but he asks to do it almst every school day (some days he just wants to play :). Sometimes we do a lesson, other days we review what we already learned. We are both enjoying it a lot! He loves having his Word Book and it has been a great way to introduce reading in a relaxed way and the suggested simple activities have been a big hit for him. Learning and fun 🙂

<p style=”text-align: left;”>Thanks Sarah2106. We are doing another reading program with him right now and he is so beyond frustrated. He is having a difficult time blending the letters together to make a short three letter word. He can sound each individual letter out but when he tries to say the sounds faster, in order to blend them, he can’t seem to do it. He will eventually get it but after many, many attempts and lots of frustration — to the point of tears.  Some words he gets really easy and can blend them with ease, like cat or gap. But the majority of the time it’s really difficult for him. Again, he know all the letters and their sounds but he is stuck on the blending part.</p>

Blending takes time, as does reading 🙂 Some kids it “clicks” quickly others it takes time.

My older two were not fluently reading until closer to 8. They could sound out and reading took time prior to that but it was more work and exhausting. Around 8 it just started “clicking” and they both love to read.

I like DR because I don’t feel “pressured” to do a full lesson or rush. In the side bars of the book there are reminders to go at the students pace. Having older kids that were not early readers, but who love to read, also helps me relax 🙂  There is no rush to be fluently reading before 1st grade or even in 1st grade (by fluent, I mean reading with ease, relaxed not as much work). So far for my older two it was in the middle or near the end of 2nd grade that reading became fun and easier. My youngest doing DR enjoys it, but I am in no rush. He seems to understand blending more than his siblings at this age, but I also know when he is ready it will all come together 🙂
