We keep screen time to a minimum around here but when I want to plunk the kids down in front of a show I get overwhelmed by all of the junk available on Netflix, Amazon Prime, etc. with thousands of options–big difference from the 80s when all I had was Mr. Rogers and Sesame Street. We only have basic cable during football season and I can’t stand anything w commercials so I don’t really bother with whatever is on regular tv.
We have six kids, ages 14-2. Library videos are not really a good option bc they tend to get forgotten and rack up fines. Do you have any suggestions?
Oh–and does everyone know about One More Story? It costs $ but it is a good option for little ones. Non-twaddly books to enjoy on the screen. A step up from mind-numbing tv shows.
We do Netflix, Showmi and Rogers on Demand (Canada). But honestly… I couldn’t go without our sattelite, because I love getting channels like National Geographic, History, and other nature/discovery channels. There is so much great stuff on there, that my kids love and learn from. I’m not sure how much of that might possibly be available for online streaming?
As for “fun” stuff, I confess, we are HUGE Disney fans here, lol, so, Disney Jr. shows and any Disney movies are permissible and a huge hit. We also like the Berenstein Bear shows, since I find there’s good morals to them. My children love Dr. Quinn and Little House on the Prairie series, so those would be something to look into, as well as Anne of Avonlea. All three were good, solid, Christian-based family shows.
We’ve been enjoying The Andy Griffith Show. It is on Amazon Prime.
Look up Imax on Amazon Prime. They have some of their shows.
We’ve gotten The Walton’s from the library. Maybe Netflix has it? I’d also do a search for The Brady Bunch. It isn’t on Amazon Prime, but I don’t have Netflix to check there.
We have been considering PurFlix. I haven’t been convinced that we watch enough to warrant paying for it yet, though.
For ages 2 – 14 (adult even), I would play BBC Planet Earth and Blue Planet. I invested in some used, very good condition DVD sets of these when my 11 yo was age 5 (younger sis was 3), and they still like to watch it. We play it about once a year. We also really like the Backyard Birds science dvd. Another investment I have made for all ages is a DVD collection set of Shirley Temple movies. I bought the Little Darling Collection a few years ago. It was only about $30 new then, but has since tripled in price on Amazon. There are other sets you could buy that cost less. You could play these every one or two years. It would take a while to get through them all. And they are short movies, like 75 min.
And we still watch Mister Rogers! They are on Amazon Prime. Agree to Andy Griffith as a good show we enjoy watching as a family. Father Knows Best, Mister Ed, Donna Reed, etc.
You can watch Liberty’s Kids on YouTube 🙂 Some educational shows we watch besides ones mentioned already: Odd Squad (solving odd math “mysteries”), Team Oomizoomi (when they were younger not so much now- 9 & 6yo girls), Martha Speaks (believe it or not my 6yo can pick up vocabulary from this one- a couple years ago we’re driving, & she says, “Mommy, I’m sweltering!”, & it was in hot…picked it up from this show lol), Monster Math Squad (again, moreso younger kids but have watched it not that long ago), NatGeo & several PBS documentary type shows are on Netflix. We haven’t really watched but Reading Rainbow is on Netflix.
Unfortunately, I’ve gotten a bit lazy or maybe just discouraged in monitoring & “banning” certain types of shows. With that said, these are some they watch (with no endorsements as to the merit): Jessie & Lab Rats (some of the earlier shows were much more innocent I think, so I let them watch but…), Good Luck Charlie, Liv & Maddie. We like Andy Griffith, The Munsters & America’s Funniest Videos. We used to watch Leave it to Beaver, but it is no longer on Netflix. We have watched The Beverly Hillbillies (the TV show not the movie) on YouTube. Of course many of those were ones I watched as a kid 🙂 They like Chloe’s Closet on Amazon (some are on Prime but not all), especially my 6yo because she LOVES to dress up & play pretend.
I was going to mention YouTube. My daughter will watch some of the old cartoons on YouTube, like Pink Panther, Tom & Jerry, etc. I guess you just search and see what is out there, but if you can find them, they’re free:)
