I trim my one daughters bangs and my husband shaves the boys but the backs of the girls we have never tried. I just might have to try it soon.

Thank you so much, each of you, for posting these tips. We have been “goin’ the rounds” with DD8 for about a year now, hoping that she would just suddenly become more interested in her appearance and take the time to brush thoroughly and more often each day. It got so bad at one point that I actually cut out a huge clump of her hair that was just too ratted up to brush out. So now she has a bunch of shortie locks sticking out, but at the time, we were all relieved to have that hair gone. Even now, it’s not that awful since in our book, it’s just hair; we know it will grow back.
However, I see now that we were off in our thinking (we were so desperate) and I just ordered that brush so that we can help her more. I am very optimistic that once we get the rats out, we will be able to keep them out and we will all be more at ease about her hair, especially her. She just cries so hard about it, but says she wants long hair. Maybe I will just cut her a cute bob (her hair grows quickly) and start over with this new brush and new outlook. And braids! And fabric ponies!

Wow…I am feeling very grateful that my girl has straight hair (mine is curly, so I understand the frustration).
Also that my 4 boys only request is, “Make me look like a Marine, Mom”. And since that is the only haircut I know…they do!

My daighter has actully cut snarls out of her hair herself a couple of times which I strongly discourage. She told me the other day to just cut it when I had trouble with one but I refuse to do that. She has stopped doing it herself thankfully. Her hair is very straight. No curls, just very fine.

@chocodog, I use the thick hairbands without the metal. Dd’s hair is VERY thick, and I haven’t found anything else that will actually hold her hair. In fact, it is so hard to keep her hair up in a ponytail that she is constantly pulling apart on the ponytail to tighten it. This is how I think her hair became so broken. I never ripped her hair out when I took the hairbands out, so I can’t think of any other way that her hair broke so. A cloth scrunchy will not hold her hair, and I refuse to use the clear elastics because I have gotten way too many of those stuck in my hair before. She has a long bob hair cut right now, and wearing it in a head band or with the front pulled into a bow is the only way I can make her hair look semi ok. It’s not ideal, but I’m out of ideas on how to deal with this thick head of hair she’s been blessed with. At least the WEN cleansing conditioner makes it tangle-free, shiny, and soft.

@ Lindsey,
    My daughter has really fine hair so we had to make scrunchies with elastic. The kind you would put in clothes. We took one of the scrunchies that didn’t fit and measured the elastic stretched. Then we cut to fit smaller. Then we put fabric on it. We also put fabric on our headbands. It helps them stay in the hair and you can take cheap headbands and just make a fabric wrap. You slide it up and around the headband and sew the open end closed. Do the same with the fabric scrunchie. If it is to big just sew it smaller. 🙂 We have tons now in different colors. I even made some to fit my hair. I hate having to twist it around a million times. Once you get the right size that fits just cut the elastic that size and make a bunch of them in different colors. We like the blue jean looking ones and the pink ones the most. Basic colors like black, tan, white, brown, taupe, dark blue ect… seem to be the ones that go with everything. We even made some for her doll. (she can wear them too.) With thinner elastic.
   Hope you try it. If my instruction are clear as mud let me know… 🙂 Oh, I almost forgot to ask. Is her breaking off or is it just normal fall out? I loose a lot of hair but it is from the scalp. My hair is longer and sometimes when I take my hair scrunchie out the hair is just from normal fall out. They say you loose about a mile a day. No wonder mine is thinner than it was when I was younger.

I just wanted to update you on the hair situation. We just used the Web detangler brush for wet hair reccommended by LDIMom and it worked SUPER!!! I was through her hair in no time at all. Amazing. Also, I had done a deep conditioning on both of my daughters and that helped alot and most days I have been braiding their hair before I leave for work and they keep it in at bedtime and take it out in the morning and brush and that is helping ALOT also.
I still need to get it trimmed but maybe I will have enough courage to do it myself soon (it takes awhile for me to build up to these things).

Yes, we got our brush in the mail too. It’s great! I also cut DDs hair into a short bob, just below her ears so she can still tuck it behind. That was about 8 inches off, but she loves it and brushes her newly snag-free hair many times a day now, with her new brush.

I am so glad you guys had great success! I thought about this thread about two days ago when my daughters hair had something stuck in it and I was trying to brush it. 🙂 Then I put it up in a pony because It wouldn’t come untangled. Found out it had syrup stuck in it! We were in a hurry and I couldn’t wash it out. UGH!!! Wet down the syrup and away we went! Tehe he   I had to joke she smelt so sweet I could eat her for breakfast. She just laughed. Have a blessed day!
