cursive & print copywork daily?

I’m trying to plan for next year.  When a child is learning cursive, do they typically do print copywork and a few cursive letters each day, or just one per day?  If just one do you still have them do print copywork occasionally or focus solely on the cursive until all the letters are learned?  FWIW my DD is 6 and will be in 1st grade.  She wrote quite a lot for school this year and didn’t seem to have any issues with her hand getting tired or anything (just rather sloppy writing).

My first instinct is to give her at least another year of print copywork before starting cursive since she’s only 6. It’s still going to be sloppy at her age and after only 1 year; not to mention that year she was only 5. Plus, her copywork should not last long, less than 10 min. in this next year.

I have my ds 6 do both every day.  I go with the thoughts that cursive is easier to learn for some children than print since it flows and there are only about 4 motions.  We do a few practice letters of the new cursive letter we are working on, then some words that have all the letters we know.  We also do his usual copy print work.  If needed you could break up the copywork so her hand can have a rest.  I use WorksheetWorks.com for copywork pages.  I think its important to do both every day so they can keep practicing and maintain what they have already learned.  In the future when he is doing more sentinces with his cursive, I might alternate cursive and print on different days.  I’m not sure what others do, but this works for us and I hope to keep his handwriting nice by the daily practice.

We do both with my dd 6.5. We only spend about 5 mn – if that – on cursive though. We do about a line of letters in her workbook and that’s all. I didn’t want to give up on the other benefits of copywork (seeing good spelling, grammar, punctuation, etc in context) while she was learning cursive letter formation. Once she knows all the letters in cursive, we’ll transition over her regular copywork to cursive too.

For anyone just starting out (ie, year K or 1) – we are now using Italic…  the italic print and joined italic are very similar…   My son is going to start doing joined italic next year…. He should be able to contine copywork, joining the letters he knows how to join as we work on it….

I think it depends on how she is doing in printing.  My dd is five and I will have her do one more year printing since she needs more practice on lower case letters.  But she really wants to try cursive because her brother will be doing it next year.  So, I also bought her a practice book–pictures in cursive primer from rainbow resource center for the next half school year (maybe start around March, 2013).  Just in case!
