My son has learned cursive and through steady copywork has very nice handwriting. He is just now starting to actually write things other than copywork such as making lists and little stories. I am very happy to see this since he has always resisted any writing. When he writes things for himself he always prints his letters. Should I let him switch his copywork to printing since he seems to prefer it or keep up the cursive? When do you let children develop their own handwriting? I know my handwriting is a mix of printing, italic, and cursive with a hint of messy lol!
I would sweetly encourage him to do all of his writing in cursive. My ds8 used to do the same thing, but his printing was not so great. Now, he’s comfortable with cursive and uses it exclusively. It took a while (months) of him writing on his own in cursive for that to happen. Doing it without the model is harder. My experience has shown it takes a good long while for them to be comfortable with it. Both my dd11 who was taught printing first and my ds8 who wasn’t have proven this for me.
I expect my kids to start developing their own style at 12 or so, as I did.
I don’t teach it per se. I give them a simple workbook, if they are interested and they pick it up easily. However, I require ALL school work to be in cursive.
As much as I love cursive, I do wonder in this day and age if it’s kind of losing it’s place. Most of the world operates on printed text these days. My older ds has enough difficulty with printing. Cursive is even more difficult or him (though I’m told it’s often the other way around). We are going to try Italic cursive in the fall. I’m torn as to how much value to place on it.
Well, the ps is not teaching cursive anymore. They are more into typing for the new age of children. As for me and my household we will use cursive…. 🙂 My neices can’t even read it and they are in Jr. High. I had a visitor recently and when they saw I was teaching my children cursive they were happy to see someone was not going with the new movement. I think we should teach our children all ways. Print first, then cursive and typing. They need to be educated enough to be able to read cursive. If they can’t then how much easier will it be for someone to take away their Freedoms. Just my $0.02 🙂
Blessings!
