Has anyone here taught their child cursive without an actual program or workbook? Do you think it would have been easier to use one? I am debating on getting a workbook, but my budget is nearly gone and I still have a few other things to get for the beginning of the year. I’m thinking this is one area where I can probably manage without…?
We just used worksheets I found online. We used these http://www.kidzone.ws/cursive/index.htm and Donna Young has some good ones too. There are also several sites where you can create your own.
If you google it, you can find tons of free cursive handwriting worksheets and makers. We bought a few really inexpensive ones from Currclick that my kids like.
We just printed off lined writing paper and worked our way through the lowercase letters first and then the uppercase. I start mine off with e, i, l, t, h, k, b, and so on. They are all constructed similarly with the slant up beginning. Then we can do easy words like hit, lit, bet, etc. then I did the letter that start with a “hook” like a, o, g, etc. then we do the “bump” letter like n, m, v, z.
As we go we practice words made up of the letters we have already learned. The children like to help think them up.
We generally do a letter for 2-3 days at a time before going on to the next one.
Tara, that’s kind of what I have in mind. I’ve looked at all kinds of work sheets, but it’s not really what I’m looking for. I mean, when I started learning cursive the teachers didn’t give us worksheets, she just demonstrated how to do it and we practiced in our notebooks. It’s about a 2-5 min exercise daily, right?
