I just discovered CM a few days ago and love it. I will be homeschooling my young 5 year old for the first time this fall (next week??!!) Everything I’ve read says that lessons should be short. However, book lists and suggestions are given on the curriculum guide. I’m wondering if people try to actually get through a certain amount of material in a year, or if you simply continue each lesson where you left off? For example, how many of the books on the read aloud lists would be expected to be read in a year? Is it okay if my child wishes to hear the same ones over and over, or do I insist on going to a new book? Would this change in later years where you try to stay “on pace” with public school standards?
To respond to your question about what to do if your child wants to hear the same book read over and over, I always try to accommodate that, especially if it is a good living book. Many times the child will end up memorizing the book effortlessly, and it is so good for them to get that rich language into their memory banks. If you’re concerned that your young child wants to hear the same book “too much” you could always tell him/her that they get to choose a book and you get to choose a book. Perhaps the one you choose will become the new favorite!
The main thing this year for your child and you is just to enjoy it. It should be a delight! No pressure to “cover” the material.
I’m going to let some others chime in on some of your other questions. I’m sure you’ll get lots of really good advice.
I’m so excited for you to be starting out and to to have the advantage of CM from the very beginning! I agree with Jenn, that you and your child enjoy the process, that you spark and nurture curiosity to learn, and that you establish beneficial habits and patterns for your family are the most important things that will happen this year. As far as covering the material- one of the wonderful things about home is that you set your own adgenda. You set the plan so you never have to be “behind”- your family can be right where they are supposed to be at any time. 😉
