I was wondering if some of you could share how / where your family does their read-a-louds ? We find ourselves always hopping onto the couch , and usually it’s completed before lunch .
How often do you go outside to enjoy your read-a-louds ? Do you have a special tea time / snack time and read together around the table ? Just trying to be creative I guess and switch things up a bit.
We read on the back patio, front porch, in the bedrooms, in the living room, at the park or on a blanket under a nice shade tree. 🙂 I usually have coffee and the kids have hot chocolate in the winter or a cold drink for the summer. Sometimes we have snacks.
I don’t read during meals because I am usually eating too. We play educational games during lunch.
I don’t usually make snacks or eating a part of read alouds because I can’t eat and read at the same time and I usually want to join in on the snacking. 🙂 If someone is hungry, they might have a snack while I read aloud but it’s not something I plan.
My favorite place to read aloud is the front porch on a cool day with a nice, hot cup of joe. My daughter likes to bring the dog along and she crafts while I read. When my kids were little they loved to build forts for their little people out of twigs and leaves or make roads in the dirt for their matchbox cars. We all have so many fond memories of front porch read alouds.
I think I’m in a rut– we almost always do our read alouds (both “School” and the fun one) with me on the couch and the girls in their bean bag chairs. But right now, outside isn’t a very good option — we have a mean rooster that my husband hasn’t used for target practice yet! (I’m not nagging, but I do remind him once each day!)
We also listen to books in the car (or Odyssey CDs). And when I’m sewing or doing dishes, I like to have a book going (Audible or from the library.)
Karen your post made me laugh ! We too have chickens and 1 dumb turkey that free range on the property. That turkey is always in the way ….. acts like a dog! So , even though it’s not a mean rooster , we have to contend with an animal that is nosy and thinks it’s a dog.
Thanks ladies for sharing , this will give me some ammo when trying to be more creative with our reading 🙂
Jamie
