Ok, so I am new to CM style and am winging it in some areas. But here is my biggest problem. I either cannot find the science reading or else when I do, they are SO expensive! I want it to be very strong CREATION science…But so far I have found little if anything.

Anyone out there have some ideas?

    Thanks

Oh yes, I guess I should clarify. The budget is next to nothing. and the age of the children ds 4 and dd6 (on about a 7yo level)Smile

Or your library may have some of the books, too.  Our state (MN) has a state-wide interlibrary loan program, so we can get stuff from small towns (have more of the religious books, I’ve noticed).  I think if you ask your librarian, I’ve heard there may be ways to borrow books from all over the US, as well.  But I haven’t had the need to do that yet.

I have a next to nothing budget too 🙂 My children are 5 and 7 and what I did this year was read the Burgess Animal book off our computer until I found it used cheap. I also pick a topic for the term for nature study/science and get books at the library on them. Right now we are doing plants so I just pick up a few books on trees, plants, etc at the library each week and we read them together. We have a done a few little experiments like a piece of celery in colored water to see how it pulls water in, and sprouting a bean to examine. We keep a notebook of our experiements and outdoor studies (drawings of leaves of trees, bugs, flowers we identify, etc) You can do topics like weather, the ocean, matter, human body, etc.

With young children it is fine to just use picture books on topics to teach science. Reading a living book like Burgess’ enhances that. I also pick up picture books of the animal we are reading about that week too and let the kids read those on their own or just look at the pictures 🙂 If you don’t have a library or like owning them try thrift stores for used books. I pick up all sorts of interesting things for $1 a piece. The science courses can be pricey so at this point I choose to do it this way. My 7ds loves science, it is his favorite subject.

The Burgess Bird book is also good (free on the computer) – and if you are interested, I have a link somewhere to a site that has links to pictures and sound clips of each bird of the book (and many have colouring pages, etc)…  My son didn’t like it when we tried it at 6 (without the extra resources) – but LOVED it when he was 7

The books listed above, while good, are not from a creationist viewpoint.  Answers in Genesis has some really good books that are creation based. You might try finding them used on Amazon.  These are a couple of our favorites:

What Really Happened to the Dinosaurs?

    The Great Dinosaur Mystery

Life in the Great Ice Age

    Christian Liberty Press Nature Readers

It may take a bit of searching and time, but I found some Creation Science materials fairly inexpensive on ebay. You can search for lots on there to get several at one time and save on shipping. Search for: Ken Ham, Buddy Davis, Master books, Answers in Genesis, homeschool science, creation science, as well as specific titles. I got Dinosaurs by Design for 99 cents plus media mail shipping of $3 on ebay.

Pollysoup listed some great titles. My son loves dinosaurs, so I think we have all of the creation science titles that have anything to do with dinosaurs. Here are some more titles:

Dinosaurs of Eden, Dinosaurs for Kids, Dinosaurs Unleashed, Uncovering the Mysteries of the Woolly Mammoth (was $3.99 on Christianbook.com)

I haven’t bought this one yet, but it is out of print and I wonder if it has anything in it that my other books don’t have. The Amazing Story of Creation From Science and the Bible. Any one have it?

You may try contacting the Book Samaritan as well.  Also, see if there are any book stores in your area that offer a credit program; there’s one near me, and whenever I get a box of books together to get rid of, I take them there first.  They go through my box, tell me how much they’ll buy the books for, or they offer me in-store credit, at an amount normally twice what I would have been paid for the books (“I’ll give you $10 cash, or $20 in-store credit”).  I’ve gotten several of our school books that way-and I still have credit left to go shopping for meLaughing.

Have fun with your little ones,

    Sarah,

I check all mine out from the library, except for the newest ones like Dragon Lore, or I find them at a used price.  We are reading through aloud The Amazing Story of Creation From Science and the Bible now from a library copy. It’s excellent; though not for below age 9, IMO. It’s full of much scientific detail and would lose the interest of anyone younger.
