I have been seeing reference to a creation notebook, and am wondering if anyone had more detail on what it is, etc? We are doing a nature notebook, but I’m wondering if we should also be looking at doing this as well? I saw the concept in one of the links referring to notebooking, and I love the idea! Also, for sciences, aside form the nature notebook, for a grade 2 level, what other things would you do if any? Thank you! =)
If you saw the references on our SCM Curriculum Guide, they refer to a notebook that the 1-6 grade children put together during their study of Creation. Basically, they have a divider or title page for each Day of Creation. Then as they study each Day and learn about the science and do experiments and stuff relating to that Day, they draw or write or somehow make pages to go in that section as their narrations. Specific suggestions for the Creation notebook are outlined in the 106 Days of Creation Studies book. Or you can just go with your own ideas.
The Apologia courses for younger children would be another possibility for a second grader. The author recommends that you create a notebook in each of those studies too 🙂
That sounds great! So much to think about! With 106 days of creation, you were mentioning that it is for grades 1-6, would you suggest just going thorugh it every year? Does it have different studies for different grades in it? Also, would you start a new creation notebook with each grade for example or just have one that continues on even in a new year? Thank you =)
It’s designed to be a one-year study with all your children, grades 1-6, together. So it has some work that all the kids do together and some additional suggestions for the older ones to do on their own or with you besides the together work. You could use it with any number of children grades 1-6. Each one makes his or her own Creation notebook during the study.
Christina, I’m using “106 Days” with my girls and we are thoroughly enjoying it. It’s a wonderful experience! I was able to get most the suggested books off http://www.paperbackswap.com.
And as far as notebooks go, we sort of fell into a few others, too. Each child has their own “copywork journal” (they named it) where they do their daily copywork. It’s so nice to see their progression. It’s simply a 3-ring binder with their pages inserted. We print the blank pages off of http://www.donnayoung.org/penmanship/paper.htm.
We started a “Book of Centuries” together, but they had so much else they wanted to add to it, that they each have a “history journal” now. They add things when they want to, those items they feel are important. Sometimes they just want me to write their narrations in it for them (they are 5 & 7). Other times it’s an elaborate drawing complete with glitter, fabric scraps or a sundry other items.
Our “nature journal” is for our weekly Nature Days outdoors. We’re learning drawing techniques and experiment with various mediums. They pick 1 special thing and draw/paint/scrub it into their journals.
Then of course, our “science journal”…years from now, these will all be so fun to look at!
We have been using 106 Days of Creation Studies and have been loving it! We are up to Day 5, and will start back up in January. My girls (7 and 10) both have their own Creation Notebooks, with a tabbed divider for each day that they are really enjoying building, and they find themselves just adding their nature drawings and such to these notebooks as opposed to the science notebooks they have set up. It’s been wonderful!
