I am interested to hear from any of you who have used “Creating a Masterpiece” as your art curriculum. I see that they are now subscription based and the price is pretty high ($40 a month) as compared to purchasing a DVD. If it were a one time/one month purchase that would be one thing but I’d like something ongoing and I am not sure I want to budget that much. Have any of you used this and what did you think of it? If you have used something else that you like/dislike will you share that as well? If anyone has an old Creating a Masterpiece DVD that they might like to sell I’d be interested in considering that too (particularly the level 1 lessons). I see they are on sale here on the SCM site but there are very few left to choose from. Thanks!

We have used atelier dvd art curriculum for two years now and love it. It is very affordable (we buy used copies) and they don’t have all the strict copy right restrictions that Creating A Materpiece has. In fact, they encourage you to use it with a group at no extra cost. We have another family come over and do atelier art with us each week. It is a lot of fun and very little “mom effort”.

We did not have success with Creating a Masterpiece.  We have 6 of the level 1 DVDs.  We’ve done 3, started the 4th, and my kids refuse to do any more.  We were doing it with some art-loving kids and some art-avoiding kids, from ages 5 -10 (7 kids in all from three families.)

I really wanted to love the program.  I think my expectations were wrong.  I was looking for something to give us tips and tricks on how to use the various media in our own creative projects.   The lessons each focus on one project only, guiding you through each step, each stroke of the pencil/pastel/paintbrush, to copy exactly what the teacher does.   The comments from my kids were ‘I want to do it like this’, ‘I don’t want to do it her way’, but then frustration when I convinced them to try to follow the instructions, that their result wasn’t as nice as the model and so the next steps didn’t work out well.

Overall, I didn’t think this was ideal for beginners, even though it was level one.  Someone with more basic experience might have done better.  Or different kids?  I know lots of people love it.  We just didn’t.

Did I just wreck my chances of selling it?  LOL

“Did I just wreck my chances of selling it?” That made me laugh out loud! I really appreciate your input and your perspective as I had not considered how doing a specific project might play out in the way you described. I can see how my kids would likely have the same frustration. I am looking online now at another option called See The Light and it is also video based but seems to focus more on teaching techniques rather than projects and that might be a better fit. I think I am going to likely pass on Creating a Masterpiece. Thank you!

I purchased the See the Light Art Class a few years ago.  We have only completed a few lessons due to my son being ill, however I plan to restart this once we begin school in October.  Art Class focuses on learning to draw, but there is also Art Projects which you might like which focuses on creating different types of art. I really want to purchase the Art Projects, but since we already own the Art Class and haven’t completed it, I’ll have to wait.  There are some samples on their website if you wanted to take a look.  http://www.seethelightshine.com/

jmac17 I was just recently looking at the Creating a Masterpiece online program and trying to figure it out. I might rather have a DVD though. Which ones do you have that you want to sell and how much?

jmac17 – If you are ready to sell your dvd’s I would love to take some off your hands.  🙂  From level one we still need Clownfish, Sunflower, and Butterfly.

Sorry it took me a while to take notice of the requests for information about buying the DVDs.  I haven’t had a chance to think about how much I want for them.  Let me check into what shipping will cost (we are in Canada, so it will be a bit more) and figure out a price and I will get back to you both.
