Just to be clear – we want to thank the Senators that voted AGAINST ratification – the ones that voted in favor of ratification are in favor of allowing the UN to dictate to the US how we apply THEIR will on our nation. Only Republicans voted against the treaty. All Democrats and a handful of Republicans voted for the treaty, which would usurp our nation’s sovereignty.
I know it’s confusing because of the the language – no fun to be “against disabled people”, but that’s not in reality what being against the treaty is. Being against the treaty means that we support parents of disabled kids, as being the BEST decision makers for their own children’s welfare. Our nation already has superb laws for protecting the rights of disabled persons and being against the treaty does not mean we’re against those national protections, it just means that we trust our own elected officials MORE than we trust an unelected UN board to make decisions about how we treat the most vulnerable members of our society.
But for 5 Senators…..the majority voted to ratify, but a 2/3 majority was needed. The vote was 61-38, so it all came down to 5 Senate votes that would have swung things the other way.
This makes a great lesson to point out to our kids the value of every vote!
Good point Sue, and it means that if it comes up for vote again, we will have to be vocal again – 5 votes is not much to overturn, and that would be a disaster. Many of us, me included have a child with a disability and I know that my husband and I will always have the best interest of our daughter as priority, as I am sure you all do; as such I do not want the UN to take away the soverign rights of this country in this way, when I doubt they much care about the individual.
Wow Sue that sure does make a difference! I think it was Abe Lincoln that lost an election by one vote. Anyway, I am surprised that some things can go so wrong so quickly on just a few votes… Thanks everyone for calling in! It really is important that they hear from us.
I was sooo happy when I found out, too on Tues. Admittedly, I was quite concerned. It as a close call. I am so thankful and appreciate all of ya’ll for doing your part.
Of course, they will try again and we’ll have to pray and call all over again.
Ugh, they’ll be REVOTING on this again in the new Congress – stay tuned for another round of calls in Januaray. HSLDA is asking people to join HSLDA – to build our membership and provide much needed resources for the lobbying that needs to be done to hold these types of treaties at bay.
