Our ds is struggling with counting by 2’s. We hit this road block last year with MUS Primer and again this year with Math for a Living Education. He’s very good at counting by 10’s and we haven’t tried 5’s yet. Does anyone have suggestions for living math books and games that specifically practice/reinforce counting by two?
put skip counting by 2’s to music, do it beginning with 0, 2, 4, etc as well as 1, 3, 5, 7, etc. Chant it over and over.
Lay out a number line on paper and put a chocolate chip, penny, cheerio, or other manipulative above each number. Now tell him to pick up every other one starting with 0(doing evens), that he has to ‘skip’ the others. As he picks them up he is to say the number of the ones he’s picking up. Put the manipulatives back. Repeat, repeat, repeat. Then show him how to do it from 1 for odd numbers.
If you have a small frog or bear counter or other similar toy have it ‘hop’ on the number line over every other number.
Use index cards and write numbers to 20 on them, lay out in a number line and have him physically step on them, skipping every other one, saying the ones he steps on. Or hop over the skipped number, etc.
I wasn’t the orignal poster, but thanks for those fun ideas, Tristan. I’ve sort of struggled with knowing how to approach skip counting too. =)
Is anyone aware of an audio resource that has something like skip-counting songs on it? My kids LOVE listening to audio stuff – that’s a really good way for them to learn things like that.
a quick example, the Skip count for 8’s songs. The Bible version talks about how the ark held only 8 people who have since multiplied. The other version names things with eight sides/legs.
Oh, and the CD includes some songs for addition too.
I have the old MUS skip counting cassette and it’s helpful….I’m singing the 2’s song in my head right now: 2-4, 6-8, 10-12, 14, 16, 18, 2-0. Your eyes, your ears, your hands, your feet, are all in sets of 2’s.
Ours is a corny muskrat singing it, but it works:) Gina
Thanks Tristan….great ideas! He’s 6.8 and we did try the MUS CD much to his chagrin 🙁 I may just let it go again for a while. That’s what we did last year. But I do like the numberline/maninpulative visual. Any books you can think of? Thanks again, Melissa
