I am researching different curriculum options. I have one DS almost 3yo. I am planning ahead because we live in Africa several years at a time. If I buy all the materials and books suggested by SCM will it not be just as expensive as Sonlight? What other options are there besides buying the books on the suggested reading lists? (no library available)
Hope that gives you some ideas. It’s too bad you don’t have a library available. We are blessed to have more than one library system (and a couple of individual libraries too) at our disposal.
You could use some free texts via the internet or loaded onto a Kindle. I think the Kindle has global capabilities, but I’d check into that before buying.
I don’t know what your shipping options are when you move over there, but you could buy most of what you need now, used, and save a bundle…but that’s only if they’d bring all your books over for you!
I used to use Sonlight. I think it’s a great curriculum, just not for us. The study guide stressed me out trying to keep up! I think the cost is likely higher than SCM because the study guides are pretty expensive and I believe they use more books per year. We read a lot of books, just don’t like to rush through with someone elses schedule, like to substitute if a book isn’t liked, savor a bit more, etc.
I would think that if you buy a Sonlight Core, plus math, language arts, science, composer, artist, Shakespeare, etc. it would be more. I like Sonlight and if you want everything laid out for you, it may be the best choice. The literature is CMish, but it’s not a CM curriculum. When I used it I was too busy trying to keep up with the schedule to add in CM things I wanted to. But they have many great book selections, similar to ones you’ll see here—it’s a very solid curriculum. Just depend on what you’re looking for. I’d do an E-bay check on what used SL Cores are going for and figure out all the other subjects and compare. Blessings:) Gina
Sonlight has a used for sale board you might look at if you decide to go that route. We used Sonlight for years and I bought most of our stuff there. If you keep an eye on it and you hit the right time of year, you might be able to get a full core for close to half price. I did a few times. I believe you may have to pay a small fee to become a member and be able to use that part of their website. But it was worth it for me. Or if you know what you’ll need to order new, an order of a certain amount will give you the membership you need.
