So I think when my 8yo does his copywork, he is doing it one letter at a time rather than looking at whole words. I think this because he will leave the end off words he knows like last time he wrote “dow” for down and “i” for is. Any advice on how to encourage him to see the whole word? I didn’t really want to start him on dictation yet though maybe thta woudl help some. He is 8 but not quite up to age level on writing and fine motor things generally.
One thing that might help is to have him go over his copywork when he is done and make it his responsibility to find the errors. If needed, you might tell him how many he is looking for, but he needs to find them, explain to you what is different in his copy than in the original, and correct them.
Another possibility is to have him read his copy aloud to you when he is finished. Hopefully, he will come to those incomplete words and grow a bit puzzled. Then you can show him the original and have him find what he needs to do to copy them accurately.
To transition my son from copying letter by letter to word by word I did a few things. First of all, I was writing out a model
And he would copy directly beneath my model. I started making his model on a separate page. Then I worked with him to teach him how to look at the word and spell it to himself, then turn to his writing paper and write the whole word from memory, then check to see if it is correct. At first this was slow going so I temporarily cut back his amount of copywork expected. He is much faster now and sometimes writes several words at a time now before having to look at my model again. It has helped that his cursive skills have improved a lot too. I believe this is referred to as transcription – sort of a precursor to dictation. He is 8 also.
