copywork – how often?

I am wondering how often my first grader should be doing copywork.  It’s for his penmanship, really.  I had it scheduled for 5 days a week, but we never actually did it each day.  Would fewer times a week be sufficient?  I don’t want to put something on my schedule that doesn’t really need to be there!
    Thanks!

Dialy, but keep it short.  That is what we do anyway.  Sometimes I concentrate on a specific letter or number he has been having trouble with or more often he does a bible verse that we are learning and memorizing.

Like Friday he did 8’s because he has been getting sloppy with them lately.

I wanted to mention that my son has kind of sloppy handwriting. If he had nice handwriting I probably would not do it daily.

My first grader and my Kindergartner both do copywork five days per week. They both enjoy it, actually. What the Kindergartener copies is much simpler and shorter than the first grader. He is able to copy four to five lines at this point. On days when he might be copying something shorter, I also add in numbers so that he is getting practice on those as well. Copywork is one of those subjects that doesn’t take long (5-10 minutes tops), but makes such a huge difference.

I do not have either child copy lines and lines of letters or numbers. It is always properly punctuated sentences. I just felt that would get old and boring (thus losing attention), and I believe Charlotte herself said something along the lines of (paraphrasing here), “Why have the children copy rows and rows of b’s if they are able to make one or two of the letter perfectly?” I bet Sonya could give you the exact quote. Tongue out

This is an example of something my Kindergartener copied last week: I can not find my two blue boats. (from a Dick and Jane book she read)

This is an example of something my first grader copied last week: “For by grace you have been saved, and that  not of yourselves; it is the gift of God.” Ephesians 2:8.

We approached copywork like any other subject: start short and sweet and work up to longer and longer passages.

    Hope that helps,

    Lindsey
