How often do you do copywrok during the week?  I have a first and 4th grader.  I read in my 4th graders writing program that they only do copywork once a week (or if it’s a long passage, to do it for 5 minutes a day).  I am still working on handwriting with my first grader, so I haven’t had her do any copywork yet.  She is working from a workbook on letter formation.

Help, I’m a little confused on this.

My 8 yo 3rd grader (a girl) does cursive copywork 2x per week – once from quote jar and once from George Washington’s Rules of Civility. She does math copywork 1 time per week. She’s been writing in cursive since she was 6 and has great handwriting, so this is enough for her. We do 10 minutes or less per session and stop.

My 5 yo son is learning letter formation in cursive and his copywork is just practice. I do it 3 or 4 times per week, adding a new letter every time or so.

We use the Presidedntial Penmanship program and do one practice session a day, over a period of 5 days. It’a the same passage everyday for that week (it’s also for memorizing), but it’s just one sentence at thius stage.

    They are 8 and 9.

It really just depends on what works for you. I found, by trying different frequencies (is that right?) that everyday for just a few minutes was better than 2-3 days for a longer one. I like the PP because it’s the same statement everyday, which takes 5-10 min. When mine were younger (mainly my dd), since she had motor development issues, it was better to do the same letter practice everyday for 5 min., writing it out, say, 5 times max for a week.

I hope I just made sense to you! Everyone does something different.

We copy daily, and it takes about five minutes.  One boy is proficient in printing, and the other has just conquered cursive and is learning about proportions and proper connections of letters.

    QUALITY over quantity.

One or two or three PERFECT lines depending on the ability of the child, daily, makes a HABIT of good handwriting.  I’ve seen this with my older son who now writes neatly always.  He is almost 8.
