I stumbled across a GREAT resource for making sense of the night sky: “Find the Constellations” by H.A. Rey. Yes, the author of “Curious George!” Did you know he was an astronomy professor? I would call this a great living book – the author loves his subject and it is written very conversationally. It walks you through identifying more than 30 constellations and more than 15 specific stars, contains sky views for all four seasons plus lots of other interesting information, is fun and un-intimidating for those of us with no prior knowledge, and actually works! My 7-year-old son found his first constellation tonight and now wants to do Moon and Stars for Nature Study every week 🙂 The book flap says he wrote a well-received adult book called “The Stars: A New Way to See Them” plus this one for younger readers. Hope this helps someone else!!

Yes, my son devoured Rey’s book at that age.
The other one- The Stars: A New… he read around 9 or 10 at the oldest. It’s not an adults book.
Also, the Wonders of Creation Astronomy and Exploring Creation with Astronomy I just handed to him and he read at his leisure before 10. So there’s some other options.
Also, if you don’t know the Rey’s story of fleeing Paris in 1940, it is good to research and a good one to share with young ones.
