We’ve started our first year of CM, using many of the SCM resources. We love it. The one different choice I made was for History. I was completely excited about it, but after 3 months and apparently alone in my excitement, it just is not happening. So I switched back to SCM and purchased the Module 5 books. We just started it and we BOTH love it. 😉 We are using a combination of oral narration or she will draw a picture of our topic and narrate (and I will write it down — we have writing issues, and this is working great to make the subject “stick” but not overwhelm her like before–I should mention she’s in 2nd grade) BUT, my confusion is whether to teach the US history with the World history at the same time? It just seems like a really large part of our day is spent doing history as a result. Maybe I need to just teach the US this term and then switch to World History afterwards? Or are they taught best together, overlapping?? If so, how do I manage to not spend 1 hour + on history a day ~~ or is that normal?? It certainly is confusing and with trying to keep lessons shorter, I feel like I’m losing the battle here LOL!! Any thoughts/suggestions are greatly appreciated!! Thank you!!
Doing both on the same day is too much. Doing WH 2x a week and US 2x, or WH 3x and US 2x. would work. You could alternate terms, but that may leave resources left undone and cause an unnatural pattern in learning, IMO.
I think you’ll be fine choosing either 3x and 2x schedule or 2x and 2x schedule and you’ll see your time drop down.
Also, if you are using some sort of timeline or book of centuries, you will find that teaching world and American history on different days a couple of times a week will start to give your daughter a sense of these things happening within the same time period, just in different parts of the world.
Last year, we did world history on 2 days and American history on 2 days. This left Friday open to just do geography and map drills. If we missed a day during the week, we could include that history session on Fridays.
