Okay ladies, tell me I’m not the only one who has a subject I just don’t like teaching. I dread preparation and teaching of SCIENCE. I love science – but I don’t love fending off all the little fingers during experiments, or gathering the materials for those experiments. Math? I’ll teach it! Teaching a child to read? Bring it on. Shakespeare. History. Writing. Health. Sure thing. But science is the very bottom of my list.
You’re turn! What is one subject you dislike teaching? Or preparing to teach?
High school math!!! Hands down! It seems like I have brain fog on a regular basis and sometimes Algebra seems like a foreign language!
I really feel this way about grammar and science too, when they get super technical. It seems like my brain wants to shut down when I things like dangling participles and eukaryotic cells come up.
I loved teaching my kids through elementary and middle school but high school level science, math, and grammar sometimes throws me for a loop!
As much as I love science, I hate science experiments. For the same reason, art isn’t a favorite either. That was the thing I loved about our old HS co-op. They would get lots of messy hands-on activities, without me having to clean-up or keep a toddler out of the mess!
Grammar used to be a non-favorite, but I’ve been going through Latin on my own this summer and my understanding of grammar has greatly improved. I’m actually finding it really fun.
Math would be my least favorite. I’d hoped not to pass math-phobias on to my DC, but my oldest really struggles with it. During math lessons, I sometimes wish my DS had been born first so I could have had an easier time teaching it for the first child. 😛
I would have to say reading. I’m dyslexic and although I love to read now, I didn’t start reading until I was 10.After many years of struggling through remedial classes. Not my fondest memories!
So far I have passed this genetics down to 5 out of my 9 children, to one degree or another. Which isn’t saying much considering 4 of my kids are still under 6 years old, so the results aren’t in for that group yet!
Reading instruction is slow and painful around here. I have spent so much money trying to find the right fit but in the end if the child isn’t ready nothing really works. I have cried rivers of tears over this subject! Give me any of the arts, science, math…love love history…but reading instruction? Please, no more!
My solution: my son will watch Biology experiments online and complete reports. He refuses to cut into an animal anyway.
For Chemistry, I’m looking to Landry 2-day Chemustry intensive.
For my dd, who has no problem cutting into dead animals and getting gross, will do Landry 2 day Biology Intensive for her labs.
She’s also taking 2 different science semesters via Landry this next year, and they mail an experiment kit to us, so I don’t have to think about buying stuff. Yeah!
Same with art: it doesn’t happen unless my dd cleans it up. She’s taking a Landry Intermediate art class this year and is responsible for all that crap;) Unfortunately, they don’t send a kit for art.
I’m useless with High School math, so I am so grateful for Tabletclass!
Rachel-I would really like to hear more about Tablet Class. We use Math U See and love it up to Algebra. We are doing the Algebra course now but I’m a little iffy about it.
Retrofam-LOL! I hear you! My son kind of grew up knowing how to drive as he spent a lot of time in the woods and in the water driving all kinds of things. He is a very good driver.
@Melanie: my son will be starting Alg this coming year. However, HE is the one who asked to use it for another year. He’s very happy with it, the teacher responds very quickly, and once you get the hang if the site, it’s real easy. He’s completely independent and loving it.
My son checks his own exercises and tests. I just keep notes in the separate teacher’s journal.
Today (June 30) is the last day for 50% off for the year, making it cost $50 for a year. If your child finishes Alg before the year is up, they can go ahead and begin the next level without further cost.
My favorite subject to teach is music history. After that, history is my favorite. I really like any subject that I can read a book about. But not science, unless it’s historical.
I really think I enjoy teaching history because of the CM approach. It wasn’t my favorite when I was in school (public school), although, I did well in it. (Which I attribute to my father- he would read historical non-fiction and talk about it with me. He is also a good story teller and good at remembering the why’s and wherefore’s of history and weaving a tale that makes sense and puts things into perspective.)
Jen, I started with Visual Latin 1, which has been very helpful. Then I decided to add some extra practice, so I picked up Henle. I’ve been alternating between the two programs. There’s no way I could have understood Henle without VL to get me started.
