I’m curious if SCM’s 6-year History rotation could be condensed into 4 years — and then I wouldn’t bother reinventing the wheel. 😉 I understand why Ancients is expanded over 3 years, but Bible study already permeates our curriculum and our everyday (Bible reading and memorization, worldview studies, read-alouds, hymns, character studies, our current History, etc.); I would prefer to more often cycle through the other major historical periods.
We combined ancients into one year by skipping the Bible portion (we read and study the Bible already in multiple ways) and read all the other books. We did one term for each time, Egypt (term 1), Greece (term 2), and Rome (term 3).
When we did book of centuries I used the history guides to fill in suggested names, including Biblical references/people which was really great because we have read multiple times about Biblical events but the guides helped remind us of how they were happening at the same time as other historical events.
To do it, all I did was look at each book scheduled by SCM and see how many chapters and then divide by how many days in the term we were going to do history to decide how much to read. We do 4 days a week of hsitory with a Visits To… lesson once/week. I almost went without the guide, just used the suggested book list, but the guides are so reasonably priced and have helpful notes for book of centuries and even prompts to help with reminders before reading, and fitting in the Stuff Left Behind. I was glad I had the guides.
Side note I really liked the audio of the SCM Ancient Egypt book (the title escapes my memory at the moment). Sonya reads it beautifully, where as I stumbled over some of the pronunciations, haha. Boy of the Pyramids is a favorite. Detectives in Togas and Roman Ransom are still talked about and read for fun. We really enjoyed all the selected books by SCM for ancients and we all learned so much.
