I have been studying the PNEU schedules a bit more lately. I noticed that composition was only scheduled once a week, even in the upper forms. Was composition simply narration? If so, does this mean Charlotte Mason only required one written narration a week? I’ve been reading volume 6 of her books as well, and I can’t find any mention of how often she required written narrations. I don’t mind requiring my daughter to write multiple narrations. She’s quite good at it. However, I do know that Charlotte had her reasons for each and every way she chose to apply her methods. I am curious to know what her thoughts were concerning how often we should require written narrations and her reasons behind those requirements. Any thoughts?

I believe the Composition slot would have been for focusing on one or two points to improve the student’s written narrations. (See Vol. 6, pp. 193, 194.)

It’s my understanding that the number of written narrations increased as the children progressed through the grades. I can’t put my hands on a passage that directly lays it out right now either, but here’s the thought process: Students transitioned to written narrations around age 10 (though some oral narration was continued all the way through age 18). Since Charlotte required a narration from each living-book lesson, and since the number of living books used and living-book lessons each day increased incrementally in older grades, it seems the number of written narrations would also increase incrementally and naturally.

I went back and looked at the schedule a bit more and found other scheduled slots for writing. I guess we’ll never know how many narrations she required nor which kinds of writing she required for the two different labels of “writings” and “compositions”. Oh, to have been a fly on the wall………….

I posted that days ago. It must have just escaped from the spam trap. 🙂
