I probably start a program sooner than some CM’ers, but I like having a plan/structure:) I do something like this:
2nd/3rd: Primary Language Lessons
4th/5th: Writing Tales Volume I and II
6th/7th: Write with the Best Volumes I and II
8th: Lost Tools of Writing or One Year Adventure Novel (haven’t gotten there yet:)
9th: Literary Lessons from The Lord of the Rings
10th: Epi Kardia Essay Styles for High Schoolers
11th: Epi Kardia Research Paper for High Schoolers
11th: Epi Kardia: The Art of Public Speaking
We also do written narrations from current readings starting around 4th grade (just once a week at first, now my 7th grader is doing two per week, plus her writing program). For all of high school we plan to write lots of essays in history and literature from current readings and practice timed essays for SAT’s.
My oldest is only 7th, so plans could change….but this is my hopeful plan now:) So far, I like that the programs we’ve picked have been thorough but not too time-consuming, and generally CM-ish. Hope something was helpful! Gina
I’m one that does history out of order a bit. Since I tie writing to a specific top in the mid-upper grades, I use resources that help me coordinate assignments. At least that’s how I’m doing it with our youngest two of five children. 🙂
Here’s my plan for our youngest (6yod):
1st: copywork with McGuffey’s
2nd: PLL
3rd: PLL
4th: ILL
5th: ILL
6th: IEW Medieval TBWL
7th: TX Living History Journal & Serious Nature Study Notebook
8th: IEW United States History vol.’s 1&2 (This will take a calendar year’s worth of time, not a traditional school year amount)
9th: IEW Life Science
10th: Bible writing assignments. Possibly IEW.
11th: IEW Character
12th: IEW Advanced Communication
Some of our older kids have done one, or more of these IEW titles. None have done them all. Our oldest daughter is a senior doing Adv. Comm. Our youngest, may/may not do all them depending on need. 11th grade will be a government research paper for youngest two DC. It’s been a senior paper for the older kids. But, I want to split gov’t and economics up instead of them being tackled in the same year. And, I’m keeping election year’s in mind for our youngest two for campaign participation/current events notebooks.
Now, this is not strictly CM, but it works for us because it involves lots of literature and both research / creative writing assignments and journaling. So, I think it tackles all a CM student would, even though more structure is involved. Our kids practice oral and written narration prior to & alongside formal writing assignments.
