We are beginning a CM co op in the fall and would like to include composer study. Could anyone give me some advice on how to do this in a co op setting? We have about 20-25 minutes devoted to this and we will meet once a week. Any thoughts would be so helpful.
You might try a combination of listening to a selected composer’s music and reading aloud a living biography. In 20-25 minutes you could have them listen for 5-10 minutes and draw what the music makes them think of or just sit and listen, then spend 10-15 minutes reading and narrating the next section of the biography. Depending on the ages of the children, you could use Opal Wheeler’s composer biographies and possibly the CDs that go with them. Her books are more for young children. A picture of the composer could be handy too, which you can probably find on the Internet and print.
Thank you, Sonya! This is the way the co op is set up:
8 weeks to a term
2 of those weeks are for field trips/community activities
Composer study would only be offered 3 weeks each term because it will be taught every other week.
I know that’s a lot of info, but I want to be clear that we have only 3 weeks per term for composer study within the co op setting. Does this sound beneficial or do you think we should include it every week? If we wanted to read through a short biography, such as one of the Wheeler books, there’s obviously no way that could be accomplished in 3 weeks. Any thoughts?
You’re right, three weeks wouldn’t be enough time to get through a Wheeler biography. I guess you could either do a shorter biography or more weeks for music study.
