I’m loking for good resourses for simple composer studies for this coming year. My goal to start with is only to cover the first 3 composers from Module 1 (Bach, Mozart, Chopin) in 1st grade. If we decide to, we can always add in the other 3 later in the year. I know where I’m getting the music, but does anyone have any good suggestions for simple books on each one or a book that would cover most of the composers we’ll eventually study? I know AO gives links to free bios on each, but they are too complicated and lengthy for a new 6 yr old boy IMO.
Go to http://www.classicsforkids.com You can download worksheets with listening maps, crosswords, art responses, and other activities (two pages per composer). There are four brief shows you can listen to about each composer that are aired on the radio in Ohio. I LOVE this website. You can even compose your own music. My girls listen to it at lunch time (they are only about 6 or so minutes long) one show per week and do one of the activities on the sheet so that takes care of 4 weeks per composer. We are doing module 1 this year and all the composers have been on it. I cannot express how much I like this website, it may solve all your problems! My girls are 4 and 7 so sounds like right in the same age range. Hope you enjoy it.
We love the Mike Venezia series Getting to Know the World’s Greatest Composers. We’ve been reading them since first grade (they’re now in 4th). We also use the Classics for Kids website mentioned above.
I have a few of the Opal Wheeler books and we really like them. I have read Haydn, Mozart and Bach. You can find these on Amazon and also on Christian Book.
