When I talked to Erin she also pushed the vocabulary program but I refrained. I am confident in the vocabulary my kids are gaining by reading great books. Spelling Wisdom is wonderful and adequate for spelling.
I own Simply Grammar and I’m going to go take a look at it. My first thought is that AG is more thorough and at the high school level, including sentence diagramming and punctuation, for instance. I thought SG was more introductory and for younger children but I may be wrong.
Thank you Melissa. I actually chatted with Karen Andreola through email yesterday and she said that if my son gets through most of Simply Grammar (not all), with a good understanding of the lessons, then he will have the basics under his belt. Then, Adjectives, Vivid Verbs, Adverbs, etc. are reviewed in Story Starters where a student is encouraged to “use” them in his creative writing.
Thanks for letting me know this! You are causing me to ponder doing the same thing for my 13yo son. AG is a lot to keep up with if the mother wants to keep on top of correcting work. Karen Andreola is wonderful. I’m glad that she helped you.
I know what you mean Melissa about having to keep up with a lot. If I need to switch to AG later I may, but for now I will try the other things first and see how it goes plus save money as well. 🙂
