I wish I could give this to all the people I know who think that somehow, adding a page of optional problems at the end of a chapter suddenly makes a good program into the Devil.

Why base it on if some checkmark on some list somewhere?
One more example of the trouble with lists and those profiting from the fears… We and many other homeschool publishers have been contacted about being included in a directory of publishers who do not support Common Core. It was described as being a helpful resource for homeschoolers to discover publishers they could trust. The catch is that they wanted hundreds of dollars from each publisher to be listed. In other words, pay up or risk being guilty by disassociation. You won’t find a listing for us or many other publishers who chose to stand against such shameful extortion efforts.

I should have been more specific with my earlier post – my intentions were not to add to the fear, but to express my personal ideas about those companies that have to deal with CC – whether or not they agree with it. The companies have lots of issues to deal with, so it isn’t necessarily fair to run screaming from them without some real effort at understanding.
I don’t mind there being bench-mark ideas for learning (we all have them whether it is the public education standards or a local private/charter school or Charlotte’s – I remember seeing someone’s list of 21 things that CM wanted 12 year olds to know) but what we have to remember is that our children are people – not machines and so we may have to adjust those bench-marks a bit to fit our family’s situation. 😉 Having dealt with our public school system with a child who had a special need, I saw this issue from both sides – some could remember that we were dealing with a child, others just pushing their own agenda at us, and some just didn’t care as long as I wasn’t bothering them. ‘Tis one reason why we choose to start homeschooling in earnest! =)

I feel the same way! We don’t need to be overcome with fear, etc but we also need to be aware and educated about our choices. We homeschool for the freedom it offers us and if following a lot of standards whether with good intentions or not…is pretty much taking away the whole reason we homeschool! Im glad you shared how you felt, etc! Thanks for sharing!

I totally agree with you! There are lots of people who will be taking advantage of this on both sides of the coin. A lot of curriculums jumping on board because that is where the market is right now as for marketing and making money. Then you have the other side of the coin where those want to insure fear and make there profit that way in reguards to what people will and will not buy, etc. I like how you broke everything down and it makes so much more sense. Being opened minded and not being led by feelings alone! Thanks for sharing the information as it helps calm a lot of my fears and will help me make better decisions either way for my family. Im still not a big supporeter of common core and never will be! It’s one reason I use a lot of SCM resources because I feel safe and secure and love how they have helped my children learn in so many ways!

Im glad you shared because I remembered that you use Right Start Math and liked them a lot! I love there math program which is why im a little alarmed and unsure how to continue on. Whether to stay with the old edition or go with the newest addition. I don’t want to choose out of fear or feel pressured that we will not meet state standards. It takes the whole joy out of homeschooling! Are you still using the old editions and why? Will you continue with the old editions?

I watched Building The Machine last night and I loved it! It helped shed light on the subject without making one feel fearful or threatened but atleast educated about what is going on. some of the videos I have watched about common core made the hair on my arms stand on end!
