I’ve combined my oldest two kids in history, etc right from the beginning. It saved my sanity. But now that I’m adding in a third kid, I’m struggling with it. I’m planning for next year when they’ll be 6th, 4th, and 1st. I’m planning to use Beautiful Feet CA history and history of science, but as I look at the books I don’t see the 1st grader really enjoying it. I’m torn between combining everyone so I don’t have to read so much and wanting to do something more geared towards him. Also reading one on one would be so much quieter than the four ring circus that goes on right now. If I split them up, then there will always be somebody to play with the toddler.

This will be my first time using a beautiful feet guide, and while I love their book sections, there’s no easy way to have the kids read some of the books themselves. My 4th grader couldn’t read most of the books herself anyway. I will have to read everything to them for the guide. So combining means they aren’t reading things themselves.

I admit, I’m starting to wonder what age can I give my oldest his own thing and have him do all his own reading? The Bookshark schedules make it so nice and easy…  Tho I know that’s tiredness talking because I don’t really want to not be a part of things. I think I am tired of making up my own book lists and schedules. Mostly the schedules.

I can’t decide whether to just let him sit there and probably not listen to the group history or do something specific to him for the year. The following year when we pick up SOTW 3 it should be a lot easier to combine everyone in the same time period I think.

We use SCM history,  and my dd8 tags along with the family readings.  I have her bring something to keep her hands busy-draw,  blocks, plastic canvas,  etc.  Occasionally I will add a find a word or something.  She used to make Famous Figures of … which are paper figures with brad fasteners.

She is still bored often,  but it works ok.

SCM has books for her age, so I use those for a separate read aloud time.  I read slowly, and she follows the words for reading practice. She likes their selections.

    Hope this helps:)

If it were me I would go with your initial plan to combine 4th and 6th. And do 1st seperately. Being it is only 1st, I would just read good books, making sure I throw in age appropriate biographies and historical fiction. I wouldnt stress over an orderly history for 1st, just introduce interesting people. If you are accountable to some authority for Social Studies I would call it “Famous People” or  “Character Study” or something.
