What are everyones thoughts on combining children? I read that some children start feeling inferior to their older siblings. I haven’t started combining children but at some point I was going to do my grade 3 with grade 1. Has anyone had these problems? I thought it would be less work to combine some of the subjects such a history geography and bible. The problems, I read about, arose with feeling inferior to the older one’s narrations. Or do you just avoid all this by having only one narrate at a sitting?
Anyway I was curious about this issue and whether I can be confident to combine my children. I hear so many examples of combining some of the subjects. The history manuals you can get through SCM and 106 days of creation are just some examples.
I do understand of course that you cannot combine math, reading, and copywork.
We combine subjects whenever possible. As for feeling inferior, we’ve not had that except when the older starts correcting the younger. 😐 I do not always have everyone narrate, but when I do, I typically start with the youngest. That helps the younger to be able to contribute something before the older covers it all. It also pushes the older to come up with something a little more creative and/or thorough than he would have otherwise. The younger ones also quickly learn that the older ones have more required of them and that helps them not feel too inferior, just lucky. 😉
