I have been reading the Vos bible to my dc (5, 3, 2) and we have an aweful time trying to keep them quiet…I have tried letting them sit on the floor with a quiet toy but my kids can make any quiet toy a loud toy…making sound effects etc. I was thinking about sitting them at the table and letting the do a color sheet dipicting whatever story we are reading…what are your thoughts? Yes/no, and why? I am still trying to figure out the whole thing so I would really apprieciate input. Also, if its a yes do you have any suggestions for good ones? I know about the DTLK website, but wasn’t sure if they would be to cartoonish…TIA!
I know EXACTLY what you mean. I have 4 ‘schooling’ children and 3 ‘pre-schooling’ children. Mostly boys. There is no real quiet here either.
We have used Vos’ Story Bible with Gospel Light’s Big Book of Bible Story Coloring pages (off Amazon, much cheaper). The coloring pages work wonderfully for the Littles, and then when they get a little older, they just draw (read: NARRATE) the story.
I don’t necessarily think the coloring book is ‘cartoon-ish’ but it’s not exactly true-to-life illustrations. Just big & simple, which makes it much easier for smaller children to color properly.
I’m all for coloring or drawing during reading sessions-I think, for my children, it’s a physical representation of their narration to come. They often refer to their picture when they’re telling me what they remember. They have to pick out what’s important to draw, just like they have to pick out what’s important to tell you in a narration. I say go for it. Just watch to make sure they don’t end up drawing Pooh Bear, when they should be drawing John the Baptist! LOL With that in mind, the coloring pages would be a great way for them to “get” what they should be while they’re listening. As mentioned above, that will probably eventually lead to drawing things out on their own.
Coloring allows them to use their muscles while and be busy while allowing their ears to listen. It’s a great way to help littles learn to focus on the moment. =)
Yes! Little ones do much better with something visual to focus on during readings. I like the Big Timeline Book that has each bible event on pages to color. I usually photocopy them and handout to those who “remain quiet” during the reading. I have only had to take away the coloring activity away one time from my dd because she forgot that rule. She has remembered ever since and life is a bit easier. 🙂
My 6 year old has a hard time when he feels the readings are overwhelming. Just today I had him draw what he heard me reading and I was amazed at how much more he got out of it than he ever has. So if a coloring page works for the 2 year old, drawing might really work for the 5 year old. Plus, I figure that it counts as art. 🙂
April, I just looked at your blog and under your “All About Me” section is a picture of your little girl. Did you make her outfit or did you buy it? It’s ADORABLE and I want one for my biological daughter and the daughter we are bringing home from Ethiopia soon. Do you mind sharing?? 🙂
We’re using the VOS bible along side “The Big Picture Bible Timeline” when they are having fidgity days they will work on coloring the timeline while I read… then we put the timeline up on the wall as we talk about the story we just read. It’s working great!!!
@scmgal yes I made that dress…It is the first pattern I drafted myself…I have been meaning to post the pattern on my blog. If you or someone you know sews, l will post it for you…just pm and let me know if you would like it…just in case I forget to check back on this thread…
These printable Bible Verse coloring pages will remind children that God can overcome their fears. This coloring page is perfect to pass out for the kids. Here is the link from were i have donwloaded the pages.
My daughter just turned 7 and I use corresponding coloring pages whenever possible. It’s amazing how much more she listens and retains when she is coloring while I read. So I say, yes, go for it! I also have a 2 year old. The coloring thing does not work so well for him yet so I just let him play with a quiet toy in the same room if I can. But if he is being very distracting, I have to set him up with something in his bedroom because my daughter is easily distracted.
Actually, that’s one thing I REALLY wish they included with the SCM modules *hint, hint SCM Team*. 😉 Apologia’s World View texts have corresponding coloring pages so that younger ones can also be included and it’s really nice to have one less thing to look up online.
Thank you for posting this because I have found that my 6 y.o. does much better listening if he colors or draws. I have started letting him draw to narrate, but I wasn’t sure if I was doing it “Right” I just had the thought of giving him a blank comic book template (multiple scenes) to let him draw as he listens. Bless you all.
