We are in a co-op and my dd who has pdd-nos struggles with her behavior. We’ve been dropping classes because she just can’t handle it. Has anyone had success with co-ops and if so, what classes worked with your child? Thanks!

    HI,

my dd has severe developmental disorder, though not in a box to label it because her behavior/problems overlap in several areas. She’s 7, but developmentally varies from a 3 yr. old to a 6 yr. old. :-)We used to be a co-op.

first, how many are you in and what are they?

I have a son with PDD-NOS who has not been in a co-op since he was 5 and it wasnt a real “class”. What classes are you doing and how old is you dd?

My dd is 6 and is emotionally very young, probably 3-4 years old level.

She was taking an Apologia Botany class that had some teaching, but was mainly a hands on course. We had to drop that because she couldn’t concentrate and didn’t want to be in there. Now she is in Keepers of Faith which is a short Bible study, active games, and crafts. It is a larger class (about 12 girls), so I think she can’t handle all the kids and noise. She has been going into meltdown mode every time.

We are only in one co-op and the class she is in is only once every other week. Doesn’t seem demanding at all, but I think the class itself is too much for her.

Sorry it’s taken me so long to get back with you. My dd is 7 1/2 and just this year I tried her in a small co-op. She definitely wouldn’t have been ready before this year. Though, my biggest conseqquence was that she was so wound up from the stimulation, she got into more trouble that day and it knocked her off schedule so that the rest of the day, and our transition into Shabbat that night(it was on a Fri.)wasn’t as it should be. My dd is also sensitive to noise.

During the class she wasn’t too bad, but it wasn’t as mentally challenging as what sounds like your is. My dd wouldn’t have been ready, and may still not be now, for a class like your talking about. I am going to try her next fall in a class at a local nature center. But she’ll be 8 1/2 by then, with alot of occupational therapy behind her. Plus, she’ll be finished with her listening therapy by then; which I have seen tremendous improvement on. Have you talked to an OT about Listening Therapy? It modulates the brain waves, reorganizes them.

I don’t want to tell you what to do, but in my experience with my dd, it’s not worth it. I decided to pull her out and refocus on her therapies, good habits, and right behavior at home and just take her to the park to play with friends. Let her grow up on her own schedule and she will be able to participate in things; but at the right time.

Hope this helps; follow your instinct with what you are seeing.

My dd is 6. We tried to do a PE class last year with really bad results.  She would do great with free play type situations. However anything structured was a no go.

This year we have continued to pull out of co-op things. However she is in a music class at church and doing wonderfully, she loves it. The teacher does a lot of movement. However, the Bible Study class is way above her head. She will sit still but I can tell when it is time to pick up, she is way past ready to go. We are looking for an alternative.

Diet really affects her and Cod Liver Oil… she has to have at least 500 mg a day or I notice a huge difference. She gets a little better each year though :o)

Speaking of cod liver oil, we recently found Coromega for the fish oils and my daughter really likes it. It comes in handy packets (like ketchup packets) for easy travel too. It has the consistency of pudding and tastes good. Just thought I’d mention it.

    Sonya,

    How many mg per package?

If I’m reading the box correctly, each packet contains 2000 mg of fish oil. Of that, 650 mg is long chain omega-3 fatty acids, 350 mg is EPA, and 230 mg is DHA.

That is wonderful to know. I will have to look into this for my family.
