I’ve been put n charge of leading our Co-op’s writing/creative writing class, and we split it into two groups – olders (4th – 6th grade) and youngers (2nd and 3rd grade). I have plenty of ideas for activities with the older kids (although, if you have ideas, feel free to share) but I’m not as sure what to do with the youngers. Many of the kids in the younger group (my daughter included) struggle with things like dyslexia, dysgraphia, processing problems and the energy/short attention span God gave little boys!
My thought was to maybe read a story each week and work on their narration skills with some of the clever narration ideas found here (draw your favorite scene, make your favorite scene out of legos etc.) I was just wondering if any of you wise ladies had some good ideas on what other things we could do – or maybe some “Do Not Miss” books for this age range. And if you have ideas for the older group, you can share those as well.
This year I found at our curriculum fair Karen Andreola’s Story Starters. My two middles, grades 6th and 7th, LOVE it! Can definitely be used with older or younger children. I almost used this idea for our co-op for a 3rd grade class that I stepped in for. My idea was to collaboratively complete each story. Instead I opted for going through the Liberty’s Kids DVD. 🙂
Have you printed out the free narration ideas bookmark from SCM? It’s a great quick resource!
We are actually using Karen Andreola’s Story Starters for the olders. It’s a big hit! The first day we did it as a round robin and they all loved it! I never thought of doiing it round robin style for the youngers, but with me doing the writing. That may work. Any other ideas everyone?
